The South American Years (1920-1927)

This series contains photographs and postcards from when the Creelman family worked and lived in South America. It also contains slides from a trip taken by Mack Creelman in the 1980s.

Archibald MacMechan's scrapbooks

Series comprises scrapbooks created and maintained by Archibald MacMechan containing magazine and newspaper clippings of his own and others' work, including book reviews and copies of his weekly column, "The Dean's Window," published in Montreal's The Standard. The scrapbooks are organized chronologically and titled A-Z, after which they are named by date. The first (A) contains its own index; the rest are indexed in the record found in Box

Correspondence of Philip Girard

This series consists of personal and professional correspondence by and to Girard regarding research he is conducting, job opportunities, associations and committees, general correspondence with friends and colleagues and academic topics. Correspondence regarding Emma Stirling and Bora Lasking can be found in respective series. Some correspondence may be located in other files related to that topic.

Peer reviews

This series consists of comments and assessments done by Girard on papers done by his academic peers. Types of records include papers and articles with comments and revision suggestions.

Refuge

Series contains records created or collected by Mary Vingoe related to her play Refuge, which was first read at Nightwood Theatre's New Groundswell Festival in Toronto in March 2013. It premiered in Halifax with Eastern Front Theatre and HomeFirst Productions in October 2013 and was staged by Nightwood Theatre in 2016. In 2014, Refuge was nominated for a Merrit Award for Outstanding Play by a Nova Scotian Playwright. Refuge was also finalist for the 2014 Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Astounding Art Awards, then nominated for the Governor General's Award for English-language drama in 2016.

Maritime School of Social Work

This series contains materials related to Joan Cummings as an instructor at the Maritime School of Social Work. The material includes course lectures, transparencies, practice questions, tests and answer booklets.

Hockey Sisters

Series contains complete and partial scripts of Hockey Sisters, lyrics used in the play, and research material. Hockey Sisters is an early unfinished play by Catherine Banks. In a 2009 interview with One Big Umbrella, a theatre blog, Banks commented that she couldn't finish the play because she "couldn’t find that hook that made me want to finish it enough to dig down and do it."

Bone Cage

Series contains materials related to the development, publication, and production of Bone Cage, including notes and research material, sketches, partial and complete manuscripts and typescripts, production records, and other material.

Bone Cage is a portrayal of life in rural Nova Scotia. The main character is Jamie, a 22 year old forestry worker doing 12-hour shifts operating a wood processor, clear-cutting for pulp. At the end of each shift, he walks through the destruction he has created looking for injured birds and animals and rescues those he can. Jamie's desire to escape this world is thwarted by his fear of leaving the place where he has some status. Bone Cage examines how young people in rural communities, employed in the destruction of the environment they love, treat the people they love at the end of their shift.

The play was written with financial support from a 1996 Canada Council grant. It was initially meant to deal with systematic violence in rural communities. While writing the play, a new character began to emerge and Banks took time to develop this one-woman show that became Bitter Rose.

Bone Cage was published by Playwrights' Canada Press. It won a national competition run by Theatre British Columbia and won the 2008 Governor General's Literary Award (English) for Drama. In October 2007, it was co-produced by Forerunner Playwrights Theatre and Ship’s Company Theatre and performed at Neptune Theatre’s Studio Stage in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was also produced by Mulgrave Road Theatre in Guysborough, Nova Scotia, Downstream Theatre in Calgary, Alberta (2009-2010 ), and Matchstick Theatre Productions in Halifax (2017).

Match Love

Series contains six typescripts and one manuscript of Match Love, a play by Catherine Banks.

Rilla-my-Rilla

Series contains records for a play manuscript by Catherine Banks based on L.M. Montgomery's Rilla of Ingleside.

Neptune Theatre Committees

Records included in this series are: program and financial information on Neptune; strategic plans; meeting agendas and minutes from the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee and the Annual General meeting as well as various other committees; correspondence from the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee; lists of board members, reports, a constitution and bylaws, and Young Presidents' Organization information.

Series primarily consists of correspondence, both incoming and outgoing, pertaining to Neptune General Managers.

Series is composed of resumes, contracts, and correspondence pertaining to Neptune personnel.

University of King's College

Series consists of records created by the University of King’s College or by Godfrey while he was President and Vice-Chancellor of the College. Types of records include meeting minutes, reports, correspondence, notes, and a video profile of Dr. John Godfrey.

Records acquired during Robert Logan's imprisonment in POW camps

Series contains records created or collected by Logan during his time in German prisoner of war camps during World War I. Robert Logan was held in the following camps: Karlsruhe (April 8, 1917); Heidelberg; Krefeld; Schwalmstadt (Ziegenhain prison); Holtzminden (Offizier Gefangenenlager); Schweidnitz (December 25, 1918). Records include notebooks, photographs, and pamphlets and other materials distributed to prisoners.

Robert Logan's photographs

This series consists of the photographs, negatives, and positives Robert A. Logan has kept or taken during the course of his life. Topics include surveying, northern exploration, Prisoner of War experiences, naval expeditions, and Nova Scotia.

Literary Writings of Frank Parker Day

This series contains manuscripts for all autobiographical writings, essays, novels, plays, poetry, and short stories present in the Frank Parker Day fonds. Most works are not individually dated, so the materials have been group into the following categories: Biographical and autobiographical writings, novels (published and unpublished), plays, poetry, and stories.

Speeches and Essays of Frank Parker Day

Series contains a variety of speeches and essays, ordered completely chronologically, that Day gave during his career. Many of these are related to his academic career, particularly on literary subjects and war. Many were given during his time as President of Union College when he was a much sought-after speaker.

Frank Parker Day photographs

Series contains photographs that span the greater portion of Day's life. Materials include photographs depicting his time in university, his time served during World War One, and his time as President of Union College. Series also contains many photographs of the Day family and their friends.

Administrative papers

The records in this series include professional correspondence and grant applications and reports, as well as a sub-series containing proposals for realised and unrealised projects.

Photographs of Arthur Stanley MacKenzie

This series consists of photographs of Arthur Stanley MacKenzie; the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University; Dalhousie University centennial celebrations in 1919; cornerstone laying ceremonies or unveiling ceremonies at Dalhousie University; the 1938 Dalhousie Reunion; MacKenzie's funeral procession; and other people or events associated with Dalhousie University or MacKenzie.

Meeting minutes

Series consists of meeting minutes of the Dalhousie-King’s Reading Club. It also contains related materials including correspondence, programmes of meetings, and newspaper clippings.

Personal Records

This series consists of records relating to Nicholls’ resignation as the editor of the Canadian Bar Review, material from the conference on editing school law reviews, the Halifax Picture Loan Society and course material from the year spent as a visiting professor at Queen’s University.

Dalhousie University

Series consists of records relating to Dalhousie University, the History Department, the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Art Gallery (of which Godfrey was Chairman for a time), and committees that Godfrey was involved in such as the film committees and Chaplain’s Advisory Committee. Types of records include meeting minutes, memos, newsletters, notes, photographs, course materials, and student papers.

Correspondence of Guy Henson

This series consists of Guy Henson's general correspondence. Correspondents range from Henson's brother, R.C.C. Henson, to UNESCO to universities, friends and colleagues. Topics covered include letters of introduction, graduate school applications, and employment concerns.

Forewords of Guy Henson

Series consists of forewords Guy Henson wrote for various publications. Forewords for the Institute of Public Affairs publications (1957-1976) predominate. There are also Henson's introductions to the Senate Special Committee Report on Poverty (1969), and the Africville Relocation Report (1971).

Materials for English courses taught by Allan Bevan

Series consists of syllabi, reading lists, Christmas and spring examinations, bibliographies, and assignments from various Dalhousie University English classes (identified by course number as title is not always provided) taught by Allan Bevan from 1949-1967.

Dalhousie University Faculty of Law

This series contains material reflective of the Dalhousie Law Faculty during Read’s early years as a professor of law and as Dean. The series contains correspondence, historic material on Dalhousie Law School, and activities by Horace Read as Dean.

Military Services

This series contains photos, medals, awards, and memorabilia of Horace Read during the First and Second World War. This series also contains correspondence between Mrs. Read and the Army Museum Halifax Citadel.

Correspondence of Will R. Bird

This series contains correspondence collected by Bird. Correspondents include fans and contemporaries. Repeat correspondents include Clarke, Irwin and Co., the MacMillan Group publishing company, McGraw-Hill, University of Toronto Press, the Cumberland Publishing Company, and the Banff School of the Arts. Bird's natural order of organizing this correspondence (incoming and copies of outgoing mail stapled together) has been preserved. See also the Scrapbook Series for further correspondence.

Manuscripts

Series contains primarily typescript drafts of published and unpublished work by Lesley Choyce, including novels, non-fiction, short stories, essays, poetry and song lyrics. Files may include correspondence, notes and/or research materials.

Membership files

Series contains case files of the members of the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia, as well as membership lists. Not every member has a case file. These membership files contain a large variety of records including biographical information, correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs.

The membership policy of the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia is very broad. Anyone seriously interested in creative writing (including students and beginners) as well as accomplished professionals are eligible for membership in the Federation.

Subject files

The Subject Files series contains records regarding various issues of interest to the WFNS and its membership. These include censorship, copyright, GST, public lending rights, and other similar issues. The types of records included here are correspondence, newsletters, newspaper clippings, reports, resource materials, and other materials.
