Fonds comprises records documenting Henry Hicks' political career and tenure as president of Dalhousie University, as well as his earlier studies at Oxford University and his military service in World War II. There are also records regarding his stamp collecting hobby, his community service, and his long involvement with associations such as the Rhodes Scholarship Committee. Record types include diaries and appointment books, correspondence, manuscripts, philatelic records, newspaper clippings and photographs.

Henry Orenstein's records

Series consists of Henry Orenstein's materials regarding his professional activities, including photographs, negatives, sketches, programs, flyers, posters, postcards, slides, correspondence and other materials. Fonds contains several of Henry Orenstein's art pieces and sketches, including related to the "Sudbury Industrial Landscape" project. In the 1950s, Henry Orenstein was commissioned by the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers of Sudbury to paint a mural for the local union hall, which was the centre of a broad-ranging cultural role of Mine Mill Local 598 in the Sudbury area. At that time, Mine Mill was in the midst of a series of raids by the United Steelworkers.

Fonds contains the business papers from Himmelman Supply Company and several other companies owned or operated by Ernest H. Himmelman and Lawrence Himmelman. These include O.K. Service Shipping Company, Himmelman Shipping Limited, Oakland Shipping Limited, LaHave Investments Limited, Nova Hereford Farms, and Himmelman Supermarket Limited. The fonds contains a variety of business papers, including meeting minutes and administrative records, ships' vessel papers, correspondence, financial statements and ledgers, legal agreements and contracts, blueprints and maps, and photographs.

Some of the personal papers of Lawrence Himmelman are also included in the fonds, including correspondence with the LaHave School, the local fire department, and other groups, financial records, and contracts and agreements.

In 1954, a fire in the Himmelman Supermarket destroyed many of the business records. Most records in the fonds are from after this date, though some vessel papers and correspondence from before the fire survived. Fonds consists of 18 series. Administrative, Correspondence, Financial, and Vessel Papers Series contain records for Himmelman Supply Company and subsidiary companies. Additional records for subsidiary companies are found in series for Himmelman Shipping Company, O.K. Service Shipping Limited, Oakland Shipping Limited, LaHave Shipping Limited, and LaHave Investments Limited. Each vessel from the O.K. Service Fleet also has a series. The fonds includes a range of correspondence; biographical records pertaining to Read himself such as newspaper clippings and a curriculum vitae; conference papers; various association files and Dalhousie committee files; lecutres; souvenirs from Read's military career that include certificates, miniature medals, a records of military service; published and printed workds; committee files related to the Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board, the Nova Scotia Royal Commission on Auto Insurance, Uniformity of Legislation in Canada, the King's Regulation Revision Committee; and photographs (primarily of Read during the War or attending various functions).

Janet Conners fonds

Fonds contains materials related to Janet Conners' advocacy work for recipients of tainted blood products and other persons with HIV/AIDS. Janet's and her husband, Randy Conners, contracted HIV when Randy, a hemophiliac, was treated with infected blood. After publicly announcing Randy's diagnosis in 1991, the Conners provided testimony to the Royal Commission of Inquiry on the Blood System in Canada [the Krever Inquiry], and became advocates for persons living with HIV/AIDS. Janet revealed her HIV positive status upon Randy's death in 1994. Materials in fonds include legal documents, correspondence, speaking notes, press releases, day planners, awards and honorary degrees, and photographs.
