Administrative history
Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company Limited was incorporated in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 22 April 1910 to consolidate the telephone and telegraph services across the Maritimes. The company purchased the majority of shares from the Telephone Company of Prince Edward Island and bought out the Nova Scotia Telephone Company.
In 1998 the four primary telephone companies in Atlantic Canada—Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company, Island Telecom, NBTel and NewTel Communications—merged to form Aliant, which later became known as Bell Aliant.
Custodial history
Records were donated to the Dalhousie University Archives by Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company Limited in 18 accessions between 1982 and 2014; by the Nova Scotia Museum in accession (1983-001); by the Annapolis Valley Historical Society in accessions (1983-073) and (1984-097); by Hope Bridgewater in accession (1984-004) ; by Eleanor Parke in accession (1985-034); and by the Cornwallis Council, Atlantic Pioneer Volunteers in accession (2008-041).
Scope and content
Fonds contains records documenting the history and functions of Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Limited. Materials include administrative, financial and personnel records, as well as directories, blueprints, manuals, public relations and advertising materials and photographs.
