Nasca lines

Subseries contains the conductor’s score, instrumental, and vocal parts used for the premiere performance of Nasca Lines by Barry Guy. Nasca Lines is a one-hour, seven-part work that was commissioned by the Upstream Ensemble and premiered in collaboration with the Symphony Nova Scotia on June 3, 2001 at the Scotia Festival with conductor and composer, Barry Guy.

The composition is named after and inspired by the geoglyphs in the Nazca Desert, Peru, which include outlines of animals and various geometric shapes. Graphical representations of a selection of these geoglyphs are used in the graphic notation of this score, particularly in parts 3 and 7.

Nasca Lines is an atonal work that uses a combination of composed material, based on tone rows and pitch class sets, and guided improvisation. There are twenty instrumental parts and one vocal part.

The song is written in F-major, contains 24 bars of music in treble, and begins with the lines "The fragrance of the hawthorn and the rose after rain / Makes my misery completer". Music and words are written on only one page.

Series contains manuscripts and printed music given to or acquired by John Daniel Logan for his personal collection or in his capacity as a music writer with newspapers in Halifax and Toronto. Most of the music is for solo piano and voice.

Music notebook

File contains a bound notebook used by Kenneth Leslie for the purposes of writing musical notations and scores, presumably from the 1930s. The notebook is largely blank, with only four pages used by Leslie. The first page contains an untitled melody fragment four bars long in the F-major key, written in pencil, with notations in both bass and treble. The second page contains a fragment of a song entitled "Sheep and Lambs", with music by Kenneth Leslie and words by Katharine Tynan (misspelled "Katherine"), with treble notations, in 3/4 metre and the F-major key. The third entry is a song entitled "So It Rises So It Soars", with words and music by Leslie, written in G-major key, the first two lines being "Builder of my growing soul / Found in deeply as you must". The fourth and final entry is an eight-bar fragment, in G-major, following a leaf that was torn out.

Item is an audio cassette with a recording of a recording of a performance by the Hemispheres Ensemble at the Music Gallery in Toronto, Ontario. The container label lists the songs performed: "The Dice are Loaded" - Peter Hatch, "Darkness and Grace" -Rainer Wiens, "3-D Head" -Tom Walsh, "Beyond Benghazi" -Paul Cram, and from the Nutcracker Suite "Arabesque Cookie", "Chinoiserie", and "Dance of the Floreadores" -Ellington/Strayhorn/Tchaikovsky (1960).

Music East recital

Item is a recording of a Music East recital taped on April 18, 1975 for broadcast on CBC Radio on May 16, 1975. The recital featured Stephen Pedersen on flute, Phyllis Ensher on harp, and Ronald Willoughby on viola, and included Piéce en Forme de Habanera, by Ravel; Intermezzo, by Andriessen; and Sonata for Flute, Harp and Viola, by Debussy.
