Act to Enlarge the Powers of Institution

This document is a copy of an act issued in 1810 by the King of England enlarging the powers of the Royal Institution of Great Britain. The act allows named proprietors to purchase a library and meeting house on behalf of the institution and outlines the requirements for elections.

An autograph letter of Saccardy, describing in detail his voyage round Acadie, and including in the document a coloured map of the Basin of Annapolis.

For meagre details concerning this engineer, as also concerning Gargas, compare the records found in the Introduction. The date of this record differs slightly from that of the official copy of his report in Paris. A later comparison may prove of interest to the reader.

This report details areas of cooperation between the ICOD and the International Ocean Institute (IOI) for training, project development, and research programs, and Mann Borgese offers her services as coordinator between these two organizations.

Project proposal for the International Ocean Institute Virtual University

File contains proposals and applications for funding for the project, sent to various organizations (including the Nippon Foundation in Japan), along with covering correspondence. Also contains meeting documents from the International Ocean Institute Virtual University (IOIVU) Development Committee, including a draft report on the project, a contract with Dr. Gunnar Kullenberg appointing him interim Rector of the University, and a draft outline of a core course on Ocean Governance (to be taught be Elisabeth Mann Borgese) for the university.

File contains an agenda and background documents for the meeting held in Tianjin, China. Includes material relating to a review of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) project, the International Ocean Institute’s Workplan for 1997, documents about the sustainability of centres (includes a note from Anita Coady), a discussion of the IOI’s new mission statement, and a template for Memoranda of Understanding.

File contains meeting minutes, a list of Planning Council members, memos, project outlines, "Proposal for the Establishment of an International Energy Institute" by Elisabeth Mann Borgese, photocopied correspondence, a copy of the proceedings and debates of the 93rd Congress, Second Session (Senate), which contains a speech by Senator Pell reading "Statement of the Law of the Sea Conference" by Elisabeth Mann Borgese into the offical record, and a copy of an International Ocean Institute report.

Third session of the planning council of the International Ocean Institute

File also contains material relating to the meeting held February 5-7, 1973 in Montreal, Canada. Includes a provisional agenda, minutes (discussed were membership of the council, financial material, a summary of projects, Pacem in Maribus (PIM), and public relations). The file also contains a copy of "IOI Planning Council Rules of Procedure," and correspondence.

File contains correspondence with the Donner Canadian Foundation regarding founding for the Canadian Friends of the International Ocean Institute (IOI). Includes a letter from Elisabeth Mann Borgese detailing recent IOI projects that may be of interest to the Founation.

File contains correspondence with Albert Friggieri concerning the International Ocean Institute (IOI)’s move at the University of Malta, and Dr. Mälkki (of Finland's Marine Research Institute), concerning various IOI programmes.

Correspondence with Judge Carl-August Fleischhauer

File contains correspondence with Fleischhauer, a judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), much of the correspondence is regarding the Independent World Commission on the Oceans (IWCO), the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), including the rewriting of Part XI. Includes "Preparation of the final Report of the Commission," for the IWCO, with handwritten comments by Elisabeth Mann Borgese. Also includes an article, “Der Dichter im Strandkorb: Thomas Mann und das Meer” by Eckart Goebel.
