Legal material of A.M. Smith and Company

The series includes legal documents related to the operations of A.M. Smith and Company. These include deeds, mortgages, leases, agreements, articles of association, bonds, and trademark registrations. Also includes legal documents pertaining to Parkdale Realty.

Correspondence of Thomas Head Raddall

Series contains most of Raddall's correspondence, arranged alphabetically by correspondent; however, some correspondence relating to particular works or research topics can be found scattered throughout the collection. (All such instances are clearly labelled "correspondence" in the Series in which they occur.) Also included in the Correspondence Series are some publishers contracts and "Assignments of Copyright" when included as enclosures to letters, otherwise they appear along with the manuscripts and/or published versions of the works to which they pertain.

Correspondence with Margaret Martin appears in her collection (Dalhousie University Archives MS-2-227).

Letters sent to Raddall after his death have been collected together in a file called "Posthumously received letters," which appears at the end of this series.

Professional Memberships

This series contains material on Horace Read’s off-campus professional memberships and participation, including: the Naval Regulations Revisions committee, Conference of Commissioners on Uniformity of Legislation in Canada, Hague Conference on Private International Law, International Law Association, Inter-American Bar Association, Nova Scotia Labour Relations Board, Nova Scotia Royal Commission on Auto Insurance, the Costa Rica national elections, Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, and the Conference of the Governing Bodies of the Legal Profession in Canada.

Military Services

This series contains photos, medals, awards, and memorabilia of Horace Read during the First and Second World War. This series also contains correspondence between Mrs. Read and the Army Museum Halifax Citadel.

Photographs of Henry Hicks

Series comprises photographs of Henry Hicks taken primarily during his years as a professional politician and university president, and includes both portraits and images of him with others at receptions, meetings, convocations ceremonies and other occasions. There are also some earlier family pictures and photographs taken during his time in the military.

Thomas Head Raddall's notebooks

One of the notebooks, a military notebook with a bullet hole through it, belonged to THR's father. The other twenty-four contain information recorded by THR and pertain to a variety of subjects, including the Mackay-Bennett, pulp mill shipments, people, places, folklore, financial accounts, and recreational interests.

Diaries

This series contains diaries kept by Roome during his military career. Diaries were primarily kept during World War One and World War Two, but some entries exist from the interwar years.

Military records

This series consists of records created or accumulated by Roome during his military career. The series spans both world wars and includes records from Roome's time as Brigadier and Deputy Adjutant General. The series primarily contains memorandums, reports, military maps, and other administrative records but it also includes passes, correspondence, and related materials.

Medical Dental Library records

Series consists of records created, collected or otherwise pertaining to the Medical Dental Library and earlier iterations of the library that served Dalhousie's faculties of medicine and dentistry before the establishment of the W.K. Kellogg Health Sciences Library in 1967. Record types include annual reports, accession books, journal and library holdings lists, committee reports and minutes, borrowing statistics, financial records and correspondence.

Correspondence of George E. Smith Company

The foreign letters are a combination of solicited and unsolicited correspondence from their suppliers. These documents are a testament to the short supply of raw materials facing Canadian manufactures during World War I and the steep price increases for these products. Some of these letters express patriotic feelings about supporting Canada in the war.

Financial correspondence

The letters contained within this series are all from companies writing to the Smith sisters about various financial matters including the transference of stock and payment for shares.

Judge Peter O'Hearn's records regarding the practice and procedure of law

Series consists of Judge Peter O'Hearn's records regarding his professional activities and studies on the practice and procedure of law, including regarding the Judicature Act, the rules of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, and other topics. Series contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, typescripts, and other textual records.

Maritime College of Pharmacy

Series consists primarily of materials from the estate of Jessie I. MacKnight, although there are also some notes and correspondence from Gordon Duff. Materials include course and student information for the Maritime College of Pharmacy, correspondence, photographs, and one Maritime College of Pharmacy report for 1919-1920.

Personal files of W. Graham Allen

This series consists of personal records relating to Allen's time in the Navy, Class of '29 alumni information, essays written for English II and some published materials, including a German song book.

Judge Peter O'Hearn's records regarding criminal law

Series consists of Judge Peter O'Hearn's records regarding his professional activities and studies around criminal law, including regarding the Motor Vehicle Act, bigamy, drugs, impaired driving, lotteries, homicide, and corruption. Series contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, typescripts, and other textual records.

Administration files of A.M. Smith and Company

Series contains documents created and used in the administration of A.M. Smith and Company. These include varied documents such as employee papers and information, membership certificates of various associations, management meeting minutes, memos, product literature, various subject files, company history, estates and will documents. This series also includes caretaker reports for buildings owned by Parkdale Realty.

Correspondence from Captain Graham Roome to Annie Belle Hollett

Series consists of letters written from Captain Graham Roome to Annie Belle Hollett while he was travelling on business and, later, in the course of his overseas duty during World War One. Many of the letters are accompanied by their original envelopes, on which are inscribed the letters' dates and those of Annie's responses. There is also a file containing envelopes for which no letters exist. "Captain" was Roome's given name, rather than his military rank, and he was known as "Cap" to his family, friends and business associates. He went on to become an R.A.F. Squadron Leader.

Halifax Disaster records

Series contains research materials, manuscript drafts and a typescript of a Archibald MacMechan's official report about the Halifax Explosion, which he was asked by authorities to write.

Operations

This series contains sales receipts, payroll records, financial statements, stock lists and work related operations. The series also contains a Customs, Canada, Export Entry application.

Thomas Head Raddall's diaries

The majority of the diaries were regularly kept, usually with several entries per week. There are infrequently gaps of a month or more. In his early diaries, Raddall records observations about daily events aboard ship, the weather, and places visited. After he settled in Milton and Liverpool, he comments on the weather, local interest issues, the pulp and paper business in Nova Scotia, recreational activities, personal matters, and financial issues (both personal and business-related). When Raddall turned to writing full-time, his diaries continued to note observations about the weather, local politics, family matters, and personal finances, but he also wrote more frequently about international affairs (including World War II and the Korean War), about his dealings with publishers, and his attendance of (or invitations to attend) various literary and historical gatherings. The diaries do not usually refer to his current writing projects.

Miscellaneous

Series contains: appointment calendars; copies of sketches by D.C. Mackay; reference material; income tax returns; list of painters; newspaper clipping; and personal expense notes.

The South American Years (1920-1927)

This series contains photographs and postcards from when the Creelman family worked and lived in South America. It also contains slides from a trip taken by Mack Creelman in the 1980s.

Financial records of Acadian Supplies Company

This series contains a record book, financial statements and shareholder reports, a cash book, sales reports, inventory and an order book for the saw mill. The majority of the records are financial statements for both Acadian Supplies and Acadian Vessels listing their expenditures for the years they have been in operation.
