Past future split attention, Performer audience sequence

Item is a U-matic videocassette that contains two video works created by Dan Graham in 1976 : Past future split attention (17 min., 25 sec.) and Performer / audience / sequence (45 min. 11 sec.). The first work was performed in London's Lisson Gallery in March 1972. The performance is a project of restructuring space and time, where two people are in the same space, and while one predicts the other person's behaviour, the other recalls the other person's past behaviour. The second work was performed at Artist's Space, New York in January 1976. In this performance, Graham stands in front of a mirror, facing the audience, and tells the audience his movements and their meanings. Videocassette was dubbed to Betacam SP by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Videocassettes are accompanied by four pages explaining the video works. Centre for Art Tapes screened the work in 1979.

Item is a video work created by Dean Brousseau in 1984. Video was produced through the Centre for Art Tapes. Videos part of Halifax Independent Producers series (2 of 5). Dinner is an experimental documentary using a universal family event as its focus. Framed in snap-shot style, the video seems to arbitrarily “crop off” the participants, saving anonymity. This tape allows the viewer to concentrate on details of inpromptu etiquette and casual conversation around the dinner table, until, in the end, as with any family event, the camera is brought out to take pictures. On the cue “okay, smile!” the photographs taken are tossed one by one into the video frame, revealing at last the dinner participants in fuzzy Polaroids.

Alchemy : End of a phase

Item consists of a video by Valerie LeBlanc. The tape is a personal recount of the director’s decision to give up one art form, that of glass blowing, to move on to something new. Shot in simple style that combines still images with a visual performance/ demonstration and a layered soundtrack. Its title, "Alchemy" references the term's use to describe the medieval science of chemistry that allows one to transform something special. It also is considered to be a lost art.

Crossing the 49th

Item is a video work by Mark Verabioff in 1985. Video was part of the Life like it: Some Halifax video screening. Video was produced by Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Item is a second generation copy, copy number 2. Crossing the 49th is a narrative fantasy dealing with the notion that the total population of Canada could be swapped with the entire American gay population. The tape uses several methods to address this fantasy: blue American and red Canadian lips share ideas; keyed text in the guise of airport codes and clauses float across the screen; sections of slow-moving, bleached-out shots help create a dreamy effect that runs the entire length of the tape.

California connection compilation tape : Six, Learning about feminine sexuality, "You know, something", Gays for better bodies, Gay tabs-straight tabs

Item consists of a compilation tape titled "California Connections" that has video recordings by Wendy Geller, Suzie Silver and Paul Best. "Gays for Better Bodies" challenges the sexual stereotyping of straight and gay men by conflating their domains in this advertisement for a gymnasium for gay men. "Gay Tabs Straight Tabs" uses a corporate advertising format to destabilize heterosexuality among men.
