Biographical history

Wendy Geller is a Canadian artist born in 1957 in Winnipeg. Her education includes a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and a MFA from the University of California, San Diego. Geller’s work focused on video and performance during her time in Halifax from 1978 to 1982. During this time she performed extensively in the Halifax area, including the Centre for Art Tapes. After receiving her MFA, Geller taught at the Kansas City Art Institute from the 1980s to 1990s. Geller’s video work has been exhibited internationally.

Suzie Silver is a video and performance artist who explores queer theory in her works. Silver was educated at the University of California, San Diego in the early 1980s, which is where she was introduced to cinema and video. Silver is now a Associate Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University School of Art, in Pittsburg. Silver became associated with the Centre for Art Tapes in 1987 because of her involvement with a compilation video recording tape entitled “California Connection” which became a part of their tape collection. This videotape features Silver’s “Learning About Feminine Sexuality”.

The tape was donated to the Dalhousie University Archives in 2013 by the Centre for Art Tapes.

Item consists of a compilation tape titled "California Connections" that has video recordings by Wendy Geller, Suzie Silver and Paul Best. "Gays for Better Bodies" challenges the sexual stereotyping of straight and gay men by conflating their domains in this advertisement for a gymnasium for gay men. "Gay Tabs Straight Tabs" uses a corporate advertising format to destabilize heterosexuality among men.
