Vessel papers of the O'Brien family

This series contains vessel documents on the vessels “Janet”, “Eliza Oulton”, “LuckKnow”, “Rover”, “William”, “Willing Lass”, “Industry”, “Actress”, “Favourite”, “Eleanor Archibald” and “Lydia”.

Fogo Island study

Series contains records related to Binkley's study of the population of Fogo Island, Newfoundland. Records include statistics by family, charts and graphs of ages and genders spanning one hundred years, and observation notes.

Justice of the Peace papers

This series consists of papers collected from David Frieze's time as a justice of the peace for Hants County. Types of records include correspondence, estate papers, wills, indentures, summons, agreements and land deeds.

Individuals

Series consists of research materials, correspondence, and biographical information of individuals who Gordon Duff had in his collection. Many of these records are research materials used by Duff in teaching or publication. The majority of the files listed are pharmacists or pharmacy clerks. Additional biographical materials of other pharmacists can be found in the Jessie I. MacKnight and George A. Burbidge series.

Presbyterian Church papers

This series consists of records relating to the Maitland Presbyterian Church and Sons of Temporance, which both Frieze and Roy were associated with. Types of records include a birth, marriage and death register, ledgers with collections to put forward on insurance for the church and fundraising, notices and publications.

H. McInnes's correspondence

Series includes correspondence to and from H. McInnes between 1896 -1935 regarding personal and business matters, as well as correspondence collected by H. McInnes.

Christine Eyles

Series consists of papers, photographs, writings, art, and assorted memorabilia from Christine Eyles. Items focus primarily on Christine and her father Charles ("Chas"), a violin maker.

Legal

This series contains indentures, court summons, a lumber agreement between Adam Roy and David Pratt and insurance policies on the business recording how much they were insured for and what types of insurance they held.

Sales and operations

Scope and Content This series contains records relating to the sales and operations of the business. Some of these records include lumber surveying and supplies, scale records, market and credit reports, freight rates and circulars. A plan of a building is located in the oversize materials.

Autographs and photographs of musicians and actors

Series contains autographs, autograph letters, and autographed photographs. The letters were purchased by John Daniel Logan and were predominantly written by composers, including Giuseppe Verdi and Jacques Offenbach. Many of the autographs are signed on concert programs, presumably from concerts that Logan attended. The photographs are of musicians and actors, including several of the English actor Johnston Forbes-Robertson, and were sent to or obtained by Logan for his personal collection and in his capacity as a music critic and journalist.

Alexander Kerr's print and publication records

Series contains published works by Alexander E. Kerr, primarily on religious subjects. There is also a large volume of Christian literature as well as pamphlets from his travels in Canada. Other records include Dalhousie University pamphlets and programmes.

Married Women's Property

This series consists of records relating to the Married Women’s Property Act. Types of records include manuscript of an article by Girard on the topic, notes and research. More on this topic can be found in the series Other Research.

Timothy O'Brien

This series consists of records belonging to Timothy O'Brien. It is uncertain the connection between O'Brien and Frieze and Roy. Timothy O'Brien married Elizabeth Howe the widow of Edward Howe, the Honourable Joseph Howe's first born son. Types of records include a day book of O'Brien's finances and expenses, a certificate of the sale of shares on the vessel Hunter, and estate papers and last will and testiment of Timothy O'Brien.

Frieze Family papers

This series contains wills, deeds, estate records and accounts for David Frieze and wife Eliza Frieze, George Frieze and Jacob Frieze. Also included are two poems believed to have been authored by David Frieze.

Maitland School

This series consists of records related to the Maitland School where Adam Roy was on the board of trustees. Types of records included insurance, loan papers, teacher agreements, correspondence, and trustee memos.

Legal documents of Powers Brothers

Series consists of legal contracts pertaining to, or agreed to, by the company and some of its prominent employees (namely Frank Powers and A. F. Powers). The majority of these documents are deeds, leases, and mortgages relating to the Powers Brothers' real estate holdings in Lunenburg and surrounding area. This includes property in the area of Lapland, Lunenburg County, which A. F. Powers co-owned during the mid twentieth-century. The series also includes: agreements between the company and other organizations, which are usually financial in nature (such as loan repayment agreements with the Royal Bank of Canada); employee agreements; insurance papers; professional licenses (e.g. Plumbing licenses); and the will of A. F. Powers. Some files in this series, particularly those pertaining to insurance and the Lapland property, also include correspondence, usually with local government or legal counsel. Personal documents and photographs of Joyce Barkhouse

Series contains personal documents that are generally unrelated to Joyce Barkhouse's professional career as a writer. The types of records included here are family photographs, diaries, scrapbooks, and manuscripts written by other family members. The series also contains records relating to Barkhouse's early career as a teacher.

Thomas Head Raddall's research notes

This series contains notes, memoirs, obituaries, and reminiscences by Raddall about many individuals; some excerpts make their way into his novels as anecdotes. Also included here are correspondence, sketches, photographs, notes, and research materials on a wide variety of topics of interest to THR including Sable Island, shipping, pulp operations, gold mining, Queen's County local history, Mi'kmaq culture, Nova Scotia aviation history, telegraph systems, trials, and Nova Scotia humour.

Mining Papers

These files consist of maps, reports, correspondence, geological surveys and other information relating to mining. The primary focus is on the Styles Mining Company, of which John Rutherford was a shareholder.

Samuel Edgar Stewart

Sub-fonds primarily contains sermons, lectures, and notes written by Reverend S. Edgar Stewart and preserved by his son, H.L. Stewart. There are also some newspaper cuttings written by or referencing S. Edgar Stewart.

Bliss Carman documents in the William Inglis Morse Collection

This series consists of original manuscripts of Bliss Carman's poetry, his correspondence and photographs of himself, along with his wife and son. Also included are offprints and clippings of his published poetry.

A manuscript of May and June can be found in the Manuscript series, and photographs of Bliss Carman can be found in the Graphic Material and Portrait series.

Business and personal archives of William McMillan

Sousfonds contains documents relating to the mercantile and shipping activities of William McMillan. McMillan was active in the business between 1893 and the early 1930s. The material includes financial records from other merchants he purchased or sold to; correspondence regarding the shipping of those goods; papers regarding the vessels he owned or contracted to sail the goods to different parts of the world, especially to the West Indies; and correspondence from individuals who ran the ships. Also included are telegram notices, personal correspondence and other material.

McMillan, William

Archibald MacMechan's diaries

Series contains Archibald MacMechan's private journals as well as one journal kept by his mother, Mary Jean MacMechan. There are also a number of memos and an address book.

Music and theatre programs

Series contains programs from concerts and theatre productions that John Daniel Logan attended. Most of the programs are from Halifax groups, but others include operatic and orchestral performances in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, New York, and Boston. Series also includes pamphlets about various performers.

Personal archives of Sidney C. Oland

Series consists of various textual records and photographs related to Sidney Oland's personal life and interests, family history, professional and charitable activities, and to his time in the Army. Files in the series were mixed in the Oland and Son fonds (MS-4-135). No other records from Sidney Oland are known to exist.

Charles Bruce's research materials

Series consists of correspondence, secondary materials, manuscripts, published articles, newspaper clippings and notes compiled and created by Charles Bruce related to his research for writing and other projects. There are also notes and clippings related World War II and the occasion of Charles Bruce's plane being shot down.

Financial Papers of Clauda, Louise and Olive Smith

The financial papers in this series range in content from Municipal tax bills and receipts to income tax forms. Tax forms cover a span from 1918 to 1943. There are a number of cash-memo notebooks listing household expenses (amount paid for fish, bread, etc). Several finance notebooks listing money coming in and going out of various committees are also included.

Series consists of materials created and/or accumulated by Catherine (Murray) Creighton, including her diaries, correspondence, financial papers, and a variety of personal papers. Records in the series provide a well-rounded depiction of her daily life experiences, values, financial well-being, and her family.
