Marine Protests of Sailing Ships

Series contains protests of sailing ships—schooners and barquentines (ships which have no main engine and operate only under sail). In the case of those files that include a typed protest, they appear to be copies of the handwritten originals.

Education papers

Series contains notebooks, diplomas, and other materials created through the education of various members of the Smith family. It is sometimes unclear if the school notes in this series belong to Olive or Clauda. The notebooks from 1908 and 1909 certainly belong to Olive and date from the time she was enrolled at Dalhousie University. A number of loose school notes without date or subject also appear here. A convocation programme from Dalhousie (1911) included in this series lists Olive Winifred Smith as graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

R. G. Dun Credit Reports

The R. G. Dun Credit Reports are a window into the lives of general merchants, businessmen, and farmers in the early 1900s. These reports paint a picture of the financial hardships Canadians faced in the years leading up to World War I.

Correspondence of George E. Smith Company

The foreign letters are a combination of solicited and unsolicited correspondence from their suppliers. These documents are a testament to the short supply of raw materials facing Canadian manufactures during World War I and the steep price increases for these products. Some of these letters express patriotic feelings about supporting Canada in the war.

This series consists of original manuscripts of Bliss Carman's poetry, his correspondence and photographs of himself, along with his wife and son. Also included are offprints and clippings of his published poetry.

A manuscript of May and June can be found in the Manuscript series, and photographs of Bliss Carman can be found in the Graphic Material and Portrait series.

Correspondence from Captain Graham Roome to Annie Belle Hollett

Series consists of letters written from Captain Graham Roome to Annie Belle Hollett while he was travelling on business and, later, in the course of his overseas duty during World War One. Many of the letters are accompanied by their original envelopes, on which are inscribed the letters' dates and those of Annie's responses. There is also a file containing envelopes for which no letters exist. "Captain" was Roome's given name, rather than his military rank, and he was known as "Cap" to his family, friends and business associates. He went on to become an R.A.F. Squadron Leader.

There are several different kinds including a general book, a 'workmans book', a 'counter book', a 'men's book' (which was probably related to the workman's book) and a 'delivery book.' All are organized the same way but probably with a specific function in mind.
