Change or decay? Carleton Stanley's address before the Empire Club of Canada

Item consists of an annotated typescript copy of Carleton Stanley's address before the Empire Club of Canada in Toronto, delivered November 9, 1933, under the title "Change or Decay?" The speech discusses the notion of fundamental social ideas that are consistent across the country, the difficulties faced under parliamentary governments to ensure such consistency, and the problems inherent in the present economic system.

This speech later appeared in an amended form in the January 1934 number of the Dalhousie Review.

"Chanties and Other Songs of the Sea" : [manuscript]

Item is a collection of transcribed sea chanties, as sung aboard vessels out of Liverpool, Nova Scotia in the 1870's, 1880's, and 1890's, and recalled in whole or part by William H. Smith, of Liverpool, N.S. (born 1867). The words were taken down and prepared in typescript by his son T. Brenton Smith, in the year 1940. File contains handwritten copies of various sea chanties collected by Frank Parker Day. Includes "Yankee Ship," "A la Claire Fontaine" (accompanied by musical notation), "Storm Along," "Shenandoah," and other untitled chanties.

Christmas card from Sgt. A. Fraser Tupper to Ralph Kane

Item is a Christmas card sent by Sgt. A Fraser Tupper to his nephew, Ralph Kane, while Tupper was serving overseas in France during World War One. The front of the card features the crest of the Dalhousie University No. 7 Stationary Hospital and is held together with black and gold ribbons. The inside of the card features engravings of tents and buildings in France.
