Public Policing in Nova Scotia

Series comprises records created or collected by Richard Apostle documenting his research on public policing in Nova Scotia for the Royal Commission on the Donald Marshall, Jr., Prosecution. Record types include correspondence; interview transcripts; provincial police department and RCMP surveys; police officer information sheets; police training manuals and annual reports; statistics; newspaper clippings and secondary research materials; and a response by the Canadian government to the inquiry and reports.

Cornell-Aro Mental Health Research Project in the Western Region, Nigeria (1961) and the Study on the Role of Women (1963)

Series is comprised of materials related to the 1961 Cornell-Aro Research Project in the Western Region and the 1963 Study on the Role of Women. In the Cornell-Aro study, modeled on the Stirling County Study, Leighton’s team analyze the mental health trends of Nigerians living in both major cities and small rural villages via interviews, surveys, and observations. The Role of Women study may possibly be considered a ‘sub-study’ of the Cornell-Aro study, as it uses much of the same research material supplemented by new data. Materials present include correspondence, memoranda, datasets, research notes, fieldnotes reports, speeches, photographs, forms, applications, surveys and questionnaires, medical documents, affiliated studies, and comparative analyses.

Henry Orenstein's records

Fonds contains several of Henry Orenstein's art pieces and sketches, including related to the "Sudbury Industrial Landscape" project. In the 1950s, Henry Orenstein was commissioned by the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers of Sudbury to paint a mural for the local union hall, which was the centre of a broad-ranging cultural role of Mine Mill Local 598 in the Sudbury area. At that time, Mine Mill was in the midst of a series of raids by the United Steelworkers.

His primary scholarly output from this collaborative endeavour was the book The Restructuration of the Faroese Economy: The Significance of the Inner Periphery, by Richard Apostle, Dennis Holm, Gestur Hovgaard, Olavur Waag Hognesen and Bjarni Mortensen. A subseries contains records documenting the development of a book about the amalgamation of municipalities in the Faroe Islands. Marginal Work World Research Program

Series comprises records created and collected by Richard Apostle documenting his work in the Marginal Work World Research Program, an interdisciplinary and long-term examination of employment and work settings in the Maritime provinces carried out through the Institute of Public Affairs, Dalhousie University. Richard Apostle's research focused on two projects: the General Segmentation Survey, which involved the collection and analysis of private sector employment data across the Maritimes; and the longitudinal Morphology Survey, which sampled low-wage establishments across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, and included managerial personnel and employee interviews. Record types include secondary readings and notes; datasets; agreements; recorded interview and transcripts; manuscripts and published papers; meeting records; and correspondence and memoranda.

Series comprises created and collected by Richard Apostle in the course of his study of the crisis in the fishing industries in Northern Norway and Atlantic Canada, which was funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and resulted in the publication of Richard Apostle et al., Community, State and Market on the North Atlantic Rim: Challenges to Modernity in the Fisheries.
