The fonds consists of architectural plans, Bass River picnic files, correspondence and invoices, counter books, customer and employee records, export papers, interest books, journals, ledgers, legal documents, merchandise invoices, photographs, printed materials, reports and shareholder papers, sales books/journals, sales invoice copy books, statement books, and stock inventories, spanning over 100 years from 1870 to 1975. These materials illustrate accounting methods, the production of and market for chairs, shipping processes, relationships with other companies and the community, etc. The majority of the fonds consists of correspondence and invoices, both to and from Dominion Chair, including orders for company goods, for factory equipment, and items to stock the general store. Together the items are useful in understanding the organizational structure, management, and operations of the Dominion Chair Company, and provide insight into business operations in Nova Scotia throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries.

The George E. Smith Company, named after its founder, was a hardware company in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Upon Smith's death on February 16, 1916, the company remained in operation. The fonds includes the correspondence (including financial transactions) with suppliers and credit reports commissioned by the company concerning their clientele. The collection illuminates the hardships for Canadian companies prior to and during World War I.
This fonds consists primarily of records related to the Board of Governors collected by Farquhar during his time on the board, including minutes; the report A Survey and Plan of Fund-raising for Dalhousie University; and a file of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and publications related to President Stanley Carleton’s resignation.
The fonds also includes some other miscellaneous materials collected by Farquhar related to the history of Dalhousie or the province, and associations/events with which he was involved. The La Have Outfitting Company fonds contains mainly financial records related to their business of outfitting and supplying vessels, as well as sales of fish, coal and salt between the years of 1905-1976. These records include invoices cash books, fish sales, journals, ledgers, vessel supply lists, accounts and lists of vessels that were insured by La Have Outfitting, as well as loans they had given out. The fonds also contains some general business correspondence, legal documents regarding insurance policies and shareholders information as well as documents relating to vessels, such as charter contracts, log books and register of vessels.
