Item is "A boy from Cherry Hill" by Garth Coffin, former principal of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Truro, Nova Scotia. A Boy From Cherry Hill is a story of a lad who grew up in a warm and loving family on a small farm in Prince Edward Island, Canada. It recounts his experiences and highlights his good fortune through receiving the Eaton Agricultural Scholarship, attending university in both Canada and the U.S. and successful pursuit of a series of career opportunities leading back to the Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) where his university studies began. Along the way, the memoir that spans eight decades includes international work and personal interests of the boy from Cherry Hill.

Charles Douglas was Deputy Minister of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Marketing. Douglas also served as Assistant Agricultural Representative in Pictou, Agricultural Representative in Hants County, Assistant Director and, later, Director of Extension, and as Director of Livestock. The fonds consists of architectural plans, Bass River picnic files, correspondence and invoices, counter books, customer and employee records, export papers, interest books, journals, ledgers, legal documents, merchandise invoices, photographs, printed materials, reports and shareholder papers, sales books/journals, sales invoice copy books, statement books, and stock inventories, spanning over 100 years from 1870 to 1975. These materials illustrate accounting methods, the production of and market for chairs, shipping processes, relationships with other companies and the community, etc. The majority of the fonds consists of correspondence and invoices, both to and from Dominion Chair, including orders for company goods, for factory equipment, and items to stock the general store. Together the items are useful in understanding the organizational structure, management, and operations of the Dominion Chair Company, and provide insight into business operations in Nova Scotia throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Fonds contains a ledger from Vernon Simpon's general store in Simpson's Corner, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. The ledger book contains entries from 1929-1930. It was also used as a notebook, with miscellaneous notes entered until 1976. Fonds also contains a letter to Mrs. Vernon Simpson (Olive Eliza Simpson) from Robert H. Winters, Ottawa, November 30, 1953. The letter is a reply to Mrs. Simpson's letter about changes to mail delievery in Simpson's Corner, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. The file with the letter also contains an order form from Veribest Speciality Company and two copies of handwritten minutes of a Community Club meeting held on November 15, 1951.

This material spans almost 60 years and gives insight into a company which changed hands several times, and also represented an important part of Nova Scotia industry. Through the material one is able to get a complete picture of the process of manufacturing pulp, from acquiring timber and land to machinery and labour used, to exporting the end product; it also demonstrates how business was conducted. Fonds demonstrates the organizational structure, management, and operations of the Scott Paper company, and provide insight into business operations in Nova Scotia in the 20th century.

James Benjamin Westhaver fonds

Fonds includes items dealing with the invention of and patenting of a hydraulic gold extractor first registered in 1887. Also involves setting up a company to use the machine and begin gold mining. The material covers a period of 1883 to 1905, and involves many individuals in the business and legal community of Halifax and the South Shore. It also includes the original patent with the specification and diagrams, other diagrams, a 31 page hand written report by Westhaver on his trip to Dawson City, Yukon in 1902 to test his separator. A very interesting collection of letters, documents, legal correspondence, governmental material, etc., etc., dealing with the starting of a company to use the gold separate and Westhaver's various difficulties with financing and control.
