This series consists of Customs and Sales Tax Drawback Claims completed by the Dominion Chair Company between the years of 1930-1941. These government tax forms include lists of the company's exports for the year, including the names of the destinations, and value of each shipment.

Bass River Picnic

This series contains documentation of two community picnics hosted by the Dominion Chair Company in Bass River in 1939 and 1941. The files include receipts of purchases made for the charitable event, as well as itemized lists of expenditures and profits. In 1941, the funds raised by the picnic were donated by the company to the Queen's Canadian Fund for Air Raid Victims.

Employee records

This series contains records of Dominion Chair Company's employees during the first half of the twentieth century. The majority of the records are time books, which provide employee names, the number of hours, or days, they worked, and their wages. The six time books often each contain two years of data, and were created between 1901 and 1943. Employee records also include a payroll journal, bonus sheet, a notebook of an employee's travel expenses, and a book describing the amount of wood hauled by each employee.

Henry Hicks' Oxford University records

Series comprises records created and collected by Henry Hicks during his studies in law at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Records include typewritten, perfect bound volumes of detailed notes about specific subjects and lectures, which were either created or acquired by Hicks. There is also a boat race programme and a 1939 food ration book.

Susan Kerslake's published manuscripts

Series contains manuscripts of published novels, including heavily annotated drafts of Middlewatch and Penumbra. There is also related correspondence, including royalty payments, requests for inclusion in anthologies, and letters of acceptance and rejection.

This series comprises primarily letters written to Halle and Mabel Bigelow from their son, John Robert, during his time in Newfoundland working for the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company.

Charle Bruce's notebooks

Series consists of nine notebooks that include class notes, personal entries and notes taken by Charles Bruce during his time as a student at Mount Allison University and as a young writer.

M/V "O.K. Service III"

Series contains the vessel papers of the M/V "O.K. Service III." Series primarily consists of manifests, but also includes a capacity plan.

Legal documents

This series contains legal documents created, or signed, by the Dominion Chair Company. The majority of the documents are lumber agreements, which the company entered into with various local landowners. The series also includes insurance papers, sales contracts, a siding agreement with the Canadian Government Railways, and less "official" agreements established within the company itself, such as wage and employee agreements.

Stock

This series contains the Dominion Chair Company's various stock inventories, which were recorded in 27 books, and several unbound reports. The annual inventories primarily tracked the number of chairs and other furniture held in stock, as well as the wide range of items sold at the company's general store, including clothing, food, and toys. Customer records

This series contains records of Dominion Chair Company's customers. These customers were not limited to the Bass River region or even Nova Scotia - regular clients include ones based in the Maritime Provinces, New England, Great Britain, and the Caribbean. Although there is no comprehensive customer list available, this series provides a glimpse into its various business partnerships. It includes: lists of customers from 1900 and 1931; a list of customers who were audited by the company; lists of orders placed by companies during the period 1892-1944 (note there is not one available for every year in this period).

Reports and shareholder papers

This series contains documents generated by, or pertaining to, the directors and shareholders of the Dominion Chair Company. These documents include 14 annual Directors' Reports published between 1909 and 1943, letters to shareholders, a newsletter, an analysis of the company's "special loans," lists of shareholders and investors (including those who did not live in the Bass River). This series provides a glimpse into the organizational structure and management of the company, as well as its economic performance during the first half of the twentieth century.

Lockeport Town Papers

Sousfonds contains correspondence from Captain Charles Smith and his wife; Letters to Edwin and Evangeline Williams; Fred Griffin; Charles Stewart. Sousfonds also contains a history of Allendale, material about schools, municipal tax list, receipt books, material on Lockeport Ships, a list of vessels and a guest book all relating to Lockeport, Nova Scotia.

Diaries

This series contains diaries kept by Roome during his military career. Diaries were primarily kept during World War One and World War Two, but some entries exist from the interwar years.

Correspondence

Series contains correspondence related to Lawrence Johnstone Burpee's research on James De Mille. Letters sent to and from Burpee between 1901 and 1946.

Press

This series consists of correspondence with various newspapers and newspaper editors concerning happenings at Dalhousie, newspaper clippings, press typescript copy and copy for publication in the Association’s own magazine, Alumni News.

Andrew Merkel's correspondence

Series comprises correspondence with friends, colleagues and publishers as well as manuscripts solicited by Merkel from other journalists about their reminiscences of life and work in the Halifax Bureau and/or about aviation for AIR (Atlantic Radio and Aviation).

Literary Writings of Frank Parker Day

This series contains manuscripts for all autobiographical writings, essays, novels, plays, poetry, and short stories present in the Frank Parker Day fonds. Most works are not individually dated, so the materials have been group into the following categories: Biographical and autobiographical writings, novels (published and unpublished), plays, poetry, and stories.

Speeches and Essays of Frank Parker Day

Series contains a variety of speeches and essays, ordered completely chronologically, that Day gave during his career. Many of these are related to his academic career, particularly on literary subjects and war. Many were given during his time as President of Union College when he was a much sought-after speaker.

Vessel operations of Acadian Vessel Co.

All records relating to vessels, such as insurance policies, vessel registers, agreements, a journal and bills of sale are contained in this series. These records are all from Acadian Vessel Co., a subsidiary company of Acadian Supply Co. Vessel correspondence can be found in the series titled correspondence.

Miscellaneous personal papers

Series consists of books by MacMechan and Ritchie (1934, 1936); 2 black and white photographs of a local theatre production; miscellaneous instructors' notes and correspondence (1946); poems and offprints (1945).

Personal Materials of Frank Parker Day

This series includes files from his time at Mount Allison and Oxford universities, family -related materials and memorabilia, legal and financial documents (which include publishing contracts and insurance forms), as well as documents related to Swarthmore and Union Colleges. Other assorted documents include the address given at his funeral, clippings of book reviews, and scrapbooks (on microfilm) from 1905-1907.

The Bill Lynch Shops carnival ride records

Series contains materials documenting the rides used by the Bill Lynch Shows and related materials. Written material includes expenses, maintenance issues, and assembly instructions. Related materials include blueprints for the rides.

Legal documents of the La Have Outfitting Company

This series contains insurance policies on La Have Outfitting Co. and shareholder lists. The insurance policies include the amount the business was insured for and which types of insurance they had. The shareholder lists include names of the shareholders for various vessels and the amount of shares they held as well as the amount paid.

Correspondence of Frank Parker Day

This series contains all correspondence found in the fonds. Due to the broad scope of Day’s correspondence and the sometimes blurry lines that exist between his personal versus business letters, the series is not ordered by subject. Rather, correspondence is ordered chronologically by decade and alphabetically within the decade.

Justice of the Peace papers

This series consists of papers collected from David Frieze's time as a justice of the peace for Hants County. Types of records include correspondence, estate papers, wills, indentures, summons, agreements and land deeds.

Journals

This series contains a selection of the Dominion Chair Company's general journals that were kept between the years of 1874 and 1950. Employees used these journals on a daily basis to record all transactions. The journal created during the period of 1924-1950 includes annual sales statistics for the years 1925-1927. The majority of these journals have been de-accessioned, but the three that remain in the collection are representative of the time period and material they covered.

Sales Invoice Copy book

These are Sales Invoice Copy Books for the Dominion Chair Company that are representative of both the range of sales as well as the invoices practices that they employed. These invoices reflect sales to many different countries, including the Caribbean, Ireland and South Africa while clearly showing the majority of their sales in the different areas of the Maritimes.
