Do or may concern, we, Sir Thomas Innes of Learney, Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, Baron of Learny, Kinnairdy and Yeochrie, Advocate, Lord Lyon King of Arms, send greetings: Whereas the President and Secretary of The Medical Society of Nova Scotia, with offices at the Public Health Clinic, University Avenue, Halifax in the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada, having by petition unto Us of date 17th March 1954 shewn: that the Society was, y an Act of the General Assembly of Nova Scotia, 1861, cap. 69, of date 28th March 1861, incorporated in the name of "The Medical Society of Nova Scotia", and that the said Society was empowered to hold real estate: that the present Officers of the said Society are as follows; President; Myles Gregory Tompkins, Doctor of Medicine, Master of Surgery, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, residing at Glace Bay; 1st Vice-President; Hugh Fraser McKay, Lieutenant-Colonel (Supplement Reserve, Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps), holder of the Efficiency Decoration, Doctor of medicine, Master of Surgery, residing at New Glasgow; 2nd Vice-President; Dara Mason Cochrane, Doctor of Medicine, Master of Surgery, residing at River Hebert; all in the Province of Nova Scotia; Treasurer Robert Orville Jones, Bachelor of Science, Doctor of Medicine, Master of Surgery, Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians, Dean of Medicine, Dalhousie University, Halifex aforesaid: that the said Medical Society of Nova Scotia is desirous of bearing and using such Ensigns Armorial as might be found suitable and according to the Laws of Arms of Scotland, know ya therefore that We have devised, and do by these presents assign, ratify and confirm unto the said The Medical Society of Nova Scotia the following Ensigns Armorial, as depicted upon the margin hereof, and matriculated of even date with these present upon the 157th page of the thirty-ninth volume of our Public Register of all Arms and Bearing in Scotland, videliced: - Murrey, a pallet or, environed of a serpent Argent, langued of the second, on a chief of the third a saltire Azure, and in an Escrol below the same this motto "Health and Humanity", by demonstration of which Ensigns Armorial, Insignia of Nobility, the said Society is, amongst all Nobles and in all places of honour, to be taken, numbered, accounted and received as an Incorporation-Noble in the Noblesse of Scotland; IN testimony whereof we have subscribed these presents and the Seal of Our Office is affixed hereto at Edinburgh, this twenty-seventh day of April in the third year of the Reign of Our Sovereign Lady Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland, and the British Dominions beyond the Seas, Queen, Defender of the Faith, etc., and in the year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty four.

Research and program notes pertaining to Beethoven

File contains drafts of program notes and research notes for concerts containing works by Ludwig van Beethoven, including piano sonatas, symphonies, concertos, string quartets, piano trios, and overtures. Most of the program notes were written while Anthony Pugh was in Fredericton, New Brunswick, with the exception of those for Beethoven's Quartet in F major, op. 59 no. 1, which were written while he was at Pembroke College in Cambridge, England, and which include handwritten analytic excerpts from the quartet, written by Pugh. The file also includes Anthony Pugh's analysis of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in C minor, op. 111, for which he also wrote program notes, and programs (with notes by Anthony Pugh) for performances by the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and Anton Kuerti (presented by the Creative Arts Committee of the Universities of New Brunswick and Saint Thomas). The file also includes extensive handwritten notes by Pugh on Beethoven's Fidelio and an analysis of one of its recitatives and duets by "Mark," which was sent to Pugh from Seaford, East Sussex, England.

The file includes programs for performances at Christ Church Cathedral (Fredericton Chamber Players and Chamber Choir, directed by David Adams and Jeffrey Campbell); Wilmot United Church (Fredericton Choral Society and Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Douglas Hodgkinson); Edinburgh International Festival of Music and Drama (used for research, program notes not written by Pugh); and Memorial Hall, University of New Brunswick (Fredericton Chamber Orchestra conducted by Harrison Roper). The file also includes longer essays on the Saint Matthew Passion by Pugh.

File contains drafts of program notes and research notes by Anthony Pugh pertaining to works by the following composers: Frank Martin, Bohuslav Martinu, Nicolas Medtner, Gian Carlo Menotti, Darius Milhaud,Michael R. Miller, Klaro Mizerit, Pierre Mercure, Ernest John Moeran, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolai Paganini, Ricardo Pick-Mangiagalli, Oskar Morawetz, Henry Purcell, Jules Massanet, Gaetano Pugnani, Michael Parker, and Francis Poulenc. The file also contains a program for the New Brunswick Summer Music Festival (August 21-24, 2002), for which Pugh wrote program notes, and programs used by Pugh in his research, including those from the Edinburgh International Festival of Music and Drama, the Liverpool Philharmonic Society, and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. The file also contains two letters from Michael R. As part of his research, Pugh analyzed music scores, and the annotated scores for Zoltan Kodaly's Cello Sonata, Op. 8 and Charles Ives' "The Unanswered Question," are included in the file.

The file also includes two programs for which Pugh wrote program notes: a concert presented by University of New Brunswick and Saint Thomas University Creative Arts society, "I Musici de Montreal" with Yuli Turovsky, conductor and cellist; and a Creative Arts concert by the resident musicians of UNB (January 29, 1989). Two other programs from concerts by the Liverpool Philharmonic Society are included as they were part of his research. The file also includes a letter to Anthony Pugh from "Don" (dated August 25, 1957 from Keele, England), which includes information on Hindemith.
