Symphony Nova Scotia fonds

Fonds consists of records created by Symphony Nova Scotia in the course of its regular business activities. The majority of the records were created during the process of concert-planning, including special concerts, annual concerts, tours, and concert series. These records include artist contracts, marketing and development documents, internal memos, and correspondence with artists and sponsors.

Records also consist of internal management records, including personnel records, office management files, and the files of the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and Chief Executive Officer. The financial administration of the Symphony is documented though budgets, statements, ledgers, and tickets sales data.

The fonds also contains concert programs and promotional material such as posters, advertisements, flyers, newsletters, and other publications. The final section of the fonds consists of audiovisual and graphic material. There are audio recordings of performances and interviews of Symphony personnel as well as video recordings of advertisements and performances. The graphic material includes promotional photographs and photographs of the orchestra.

Concerts in historic settings

File contains records about the Heritage Trust's concert series, for which Stephen Pedersen was musical director, including a 1979 annual report of the Heritage Trust; small posters; and a newspaper clipping. There are also notes and a script for An Evening with Adele Hugo in Halifax, and correspondence with Nimbus Publishing about the possibility of a book and cassette series based on the concert series.

Early concert programs and reviews

File contains recital and concert programs and reviews from Stephen Pedersen's student days; a copy of the National Composers' Competition of the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada entry rules; and a letter of rejection from the Canadian Music Centre. There are also programs for two flute seminars.

Autographs and letters from various composers

File includes a postcard with a black and white photograph of Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945), an Italian opera composer. The postcard has various signatures on the front, including Francesco Marconi (1855-1916, operatic tenor from Rome) and four other illegible signatures. The postcard is addressed to Frau Dr. Lehnsern(?) of Berlin. File also includes the incipits of three pieces by Ignaz Moscheles (1794-1870), signed at dated October 3, 1844. There are also five letters written by the following composers: Jacques Offenbach (1879), Gustav Mahler (1899), Edvard Grieg (1902), Maurice Ravel (1921), and Ignacy Paderewski (n.d., 1860-1941).

File contains two letters from the Canadian violinist Kathleen Parlow concerning reviews of her performances by John Daniel Logan and Logan's poetry. One of the letters (dated April 19, 1912), mentions the sinking of the Titanic in passing. One of the letters originally contained two photographs of Parlow, one for the press and one for Logan.

File contains a letter from the singer Hilda Roberts. The letter contains an overview of her performances to date in anticipation of a concert in Halifax. The file also contains a series of testimonials from Manlio Di Veroli, Musical Director of the Opera House in Rome and the London Opera House, who taught Roberts in London.

File contains drafts of, and research for, program notes by Anthony Pugh pertaining to the following composers: Giovanni Gabrieli, Francesco Geminiani, George Gershwin, Alexander Glazounov, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Mikhail Glinka, Edvard Grieg, Johan Halvorsen, George Frideric Handel, Franz Joseph Haydn, Paul Hindemith, Josef Holbrooke, Arthur Honnegger, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Gustav Holst, Charles Ives, Dmitry Kabalevsky, Aram Khachaturian, Zoltan Kodaly, Édouard Lalo, Witold Lutoslawski, and Fritz Kreisler. As part of his research, Pugh analyzed music scores, and the annotated scores for Zoltan Kodaly's Cello Sonata, Op. 8 and Charles Ives' "The Unanswered Question," are included in the file.

The file also includes two programs for which Pugh wrote program notes: a concert presented by University of New Brunswick and Saint Thomas University Creative Arts society, "I Musici de Montreal" with Yuli Turovsky, conductor and cellist; and a Creative Arts concert by the resident musicians of UNB (January 29, 1989). Two other programs from concerts by the Liverpool Philharmonic Society are included as they were part of his research. The file also includes a letter to Anthony Pugh from "Don" (dated August 25, 1957 from Keele, England), which includes information on Hindemith.

Research and program notes pertaining to Scarlatti

File contains drafts of program notes by Anthony Pugh pertaining to works by Domenico Scarlatti. The file includes Pugh's chronological analysis of Scarlatti's extant sonatas, annotated copies of the incipits for the sonatas, and correspondence with P. Joan Hymans of the British Broadcasting Corporation about the numbering of the Scarlatti sonatas.

Permit me, in bad English, to thank you for your songs & for your essay on my musical work. Both has [sic] given me much pleasure. I also congratulate you to your reputation in America as teacher and composer and beg you kindly to receive from me and my wife our best compliments. Yours faithfully, Edvard Grieg."
