imX Communications Inc. fonds

Fonds consists of records regarding imX’s corporate operations, productions, and other projects between 1985 and 2008. Corporate operations include imX Communications and its subsidiary companies: ImageX, Helix Animation, and North/Northeast Ventures. Film productions include theatrical full-length or short films, including documentaries. Television productions include made-for-television movies and documentaries, stand-alone productions, and series. Animated productions include feature length, television series, and shorts.

This fonds comprises ninety-four series which are arranged alphabetically by the name of the corporate entity, production, and project. Textual files contain a wide range of documents including scripts, call sheets and daily production reports, funding applications, cast and crew employment contracts, notes on location scouting, co-production agreements, marketing plans, budgets, music cue sheets, insurance coverage, and correspondence. Electronic mail (4.57 GB) downloaded from the e-mail server at imX corporate headquarters in Halifax contains 32,134 individual messages in 1,054 folders covering all aspects of corporate operations and business transactions. There are also 23,368 electronic files (15.6GB) that support the activities of imX, imageX, and Helix Animation documents in use between 1990 and 2008. Together with the text files, they represent a complete record of the activities of imX Communications and its affiliates.

Most corporate records have been retained in order to provide a full picture of what it is like to run a film production company in Nova Scotia. In addition, the records for three feature film productions, The Divine Ryans, Margaret’s Museum, and Love and Death on Long Island, have also been fully retained. 134 linear feet of textual material was not retained.

The George E. Smith Company, named after its founder, was a hardware company in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Upon Smith's death on February 16, 1916, the company remained in operation. The fonds includes the correspondence (including financial transactions) with suppliers and credit reports commissioned by the company concerning their clientele. The collection illuminates the hardships for Canadian companies prior to and during World War I.

Fonds contains the business papers from Himmelman Supply Company and several other companies owned or operated by Ernest H. Himmelman and Lawrence Himmelman. These include O.K. Service Shipping Company, Himmelman Shipping Limited, Oakland Shipping Limited, LaHave Investments Limited, Nova Hereford Farms, and Himmelman Supermarket Limited. The fonds contains a variety of business papers, including meeting minutes and administrative records, ships' vessel papers, correspondence, financial statements and ledgers, legal agreements and contracts, blueprints and maps, and photographs.

Some of the personal papers of Lawrence Himmelman are also included in the fonds, including correspondence with the LaHave School, the local fire department, and other groups, financial records, and contracts and agreements.

In 1954, a fire in the Himmelman Supermarket destroyed many of the business records. Most records in the fonds are from after this date, though some vessel papers and correspondence from before the fire survived. Fonds consists of 18 series. Administrative, Correspondence, Financial, and Vessel Papers Series contain records for Himmelman Supply Company and subsidiary companies. Additional records for subsidiary companies are found in series for Himmelman Shipping Company, O.K. Service Shipping Limited, Oakland Shipping Limited, LaHave Shipping Limited, and LaHave Investments Limited. Each vessel from the O.K. Service Fleet also has a series. It also includes a rich collection of records pertaining to NSDL-affiliated associations and events. Among the many regional and national associations and festivals represented are the Canadian Child and Youth Drama Association, Dalhousie University cultural activities, Neptune Theatre, Nova Scotia Cultural Federations, Pier One, Portus Productions, Theatre Arts Guild, Atlantic Drama Festival, Dominion Drama Festival, Joseph Howe Festival, and One Act Play Festival.

Fonds contains correspondence, production records, scripts, flyers, posters, programs, promotional materials, press reviews, financial records, organizational management, documents regarding the theatre building and property, workshop programming, as well as touring production records. There is extensive correspondence regarding script acquisition and production; some correspondents included Canadian and Haligonian playwrights. Many scripts contain annotations by directors and actors. Set drawings, lighting cues, props lists and theatre renovation plans are also part of this fonds.

Fonds consists of textual records created and accumulated by various groups and organizations within the Institute of Public Affairs.. Records include articles, correspondence, minutes, memos, newspaper and magazine clippings, interviews, field notes, pamphlets and reports. Many of the documents pertain to the internal operations of the IPA.

The fonds also contains research proposals and reports related to energy, community growth, urban and rural development, labour studies, education, economic and industrial development, the medical sector and housing. There is significant work on the health, employment and economic status of African Nova Scotians.

The fonds also contains reference material kept by the IPA in its corporate library, which was used in the research and drafting of various reports.

Collection contains over 55,000 glass plate negatives, film negatives, and prints from the Waldren Studios of New Glasgow and Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The majority of these negatives are portraits, nearly all of which are identified and dated. A number of the portraits represent some of the earliest photos of Black Nova Scotians from Pictou, Antigonish and Guysborough counties. Many of the remaining photos are local scenes, a few of which were taken in New Glasgow before the fire in 1874 which devastated the town. The collection contains photographs that depict show coal mining, shipbuilding and other local industries in action. Portraits of family groups, sports teams, social clubs and school groups are also well represented.

Collection contains documents relating to the mercantile and shipping activities of William McMillan, McMillan was active in the business between 1893 and the early 1930's. Records include receipts, invoices and other material from other merchants he purchased or sold to, correspondence regarding the shipping of those goods, papers regarding the vessels he owned or contracted to sail the material to different parts of the world and correspondence from individuals who ran the ships. Also included are telegram notices, personal correspondence and other material. This collection also contains material from the Locke Family, the Harding Family, all in Lockeport, Nova Scotia. It also contains documents from different individuals in the town of Lockeport.

Part of the material included in this collection is the research of Trevor Bebb. He was working on the shipping history of Lockeport and the surrounding areas and as such has collected a great deal of material. Included in his papers are research notes, photocopies of shipping and customs records, diaries and logs, and printed material.

Alfred Dickie fonds

This fonds consists of records which document the personal and business activities and interests of Alfred Dickie and, to a lesser extent, those of his immediate family and employees. Although the records span Dickie’s lifetime, few relate to his childhood, education, or final two years of life. Some items, in particular those concerning his export lumber business or his travels, derive from various places in North and South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and South Africa, though by far the majority are found to be located within Nova Scotia.

The fonds includes correspondence, business and administrative records, speeches, photographs, legal documents, and plans, among other materials. Records are chiefly in English, although a very small portion are in French, Norwegian, Finnish, Spanish, and Italian.

Fonds consists of administrative files, community involvement details, contract records, correspondence, employee records, financial documents, job estimates and job files, legal documents, photographs, plans, printed material, notes on solar heating projects, sound recordings, and union/association documents, as well as a series with material from the Murphy and Wharton Company. This material spans over 100 years from 1858 to 1987, and illustrates how business was conducted (meetings, annual reports, accounting and financial statements) and the relationship with the community (both charitable and with other businesses). There are also very detailed accounts of the work done by the company, from initial quotes through to project planning, blueprints, product literature, and finishing. Together the items demonstrate the organizational structure, management, and operations of the Powers Brothers company. These items provide insight into business operations in Nova Scotia throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries.
