The women were passengers on an R Family Vacations cruise, organized by Rosie O'Donnell for LGBT partners and their families. They travelled to Halifax specifically to marry, and were some of the first same-sex partners married in Nova Scotia. The wedding was officiated by Safe Harbour pastor, Reverend Darlene Young, and was witnessed by Dr. Brenda Hattie and Young's partner Mun Lei.
