Leather community materials

Series contains materials collected by Al Stewart as part of his involvement with the Halifax-based TightRope leather brotherhood, which was established in the early 1990s, incorporated in 1997, and disbanded in 2007. Series also contains materials related to the Mr. Atlantic Canada Leather [MACLeather] organization, which operated between 1999-2010, and the leather community more broadly. Materials include TightRope administrative and financial records, correspondence, and promotional materials; event cards, flyers, posters, programs, and certificates of participation for TightRope events, MACLeather contests, and leather events across Canada and the United States; photographs of TightRope meet-ups, MACLeather contests, and other leather community events; web print-outs; issues of the Phalia newsletter published by Spearhead leather and denim club in Toronto; erotic gear catalogues; and one copy of the 2002 Men of Pumpjack calendar.

File is an audio reel containing a telephone interview with Warren Allmand, the Liberal Member of Parliament and former Solicitor General during the abolition of the death act in Canada in 1976. Allmand spoke with CKDU about capital punishment. The interview is in two parts (7 min., 44 sec. and 8 min., 41 sec.) and aired August 28, 1986. It was rebroadcast August 29, 1986 at 8:30 am and September 3, 1986.

File is an audio reel containing an episode of The Word is Out, a radio program broadcast on CKDU radio 88.1. This episode features an interview with Todd Layland and Pierre Beaulne, an American and a Canadian who wished to have same sex marriage legally recognised in Canada (from Fiona York of CKCU FM in Ottawa). The episode was recorded on October 13, 1992, and was broadcasted on the same day.

File is an audio reel containing an interview with Marion Dewar, the national president of the New Democratic Party (NDP), former mayor of Ottawa, and deputy chair of the Council of Canadians. She spoke with CKDU's Ken Burke while in Halifax for a Council of Canadians meeting and spoke about the threat posed by a free trade agreement with the United States. The interview aired September 14, 1986 and was rebroadcast on Title Waves September 15, 1986; September 19, 1986; and October 14, 1986.

Interview with Betty Peterson and Donna Smyth on a vigil at the Halifax Library

File is an audio reel containing an interview with Betty Peterson and Donna Smyth, a professor of history at Acadia University and a member of the Voice of Women. Peterson was one of the organisers of a vigil held at the Halifax Library in solidarity with Croatian and Serbian "Women in Black," a movement that protests the rape of over 20,000 women and children in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The vigil was also held in protest of the ARMX fair in Ottawa. Peterson and Smyth spoke with CKDU's Sara Shields about the vigil. The interview aired March 17, 1993 and was rebroadcast March 18, 1993 on The Evening Affair.
