Biographical history

Dr. Hattie was born in Pictou on July 27, 1870. He received his early education at Pictou Academy and later studied at McGill University, graduating with an M.D.,C.M. in 1891.

Upon graduation he returned to Nova Scotia to work at the Nova Scotia Hospital. In 1908, he was appointed Superintendent of the Institution, a post he held until 1912 when he was named Provincial Officer of Health. Dr. Hattie passed away December 4, 1931.

Custodial history

The materials were donated in two accession, one in 1970 and one in 1984. The 1970 accession was a gift of William Harop Hattie. The custodial history of the 1984 accession is unknown.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of correspondence with the Canadian Medical Association and its professional journal. Other contents include manuscripts of papers and addresses, including publications by Dr. Hattie. Fonds also contains several obituaries from different sources as well as a letter from Sec. Graduates of McGill University H.C. Pruell, (dated March 10, 1897) and a letter from Sir J.W. Dawson (dated March 20, 1897).
