Administrative history

V. S. Sweeny Ltd. was founded by Jacob Sweeny in 1860 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Sweeny was a carpenter and cabinet-maker by trade, and worked for J.G. Allen, a furniture dealer and undertaker. Sweeny bought the business in 1860. Sweeny’s son, Vernon S. Sweeny, took over operations in 1918 and sold the furniture-dealing portion of the business to the Rogers Company in 1919. The undertaking business remained in the Sweeny family until 1973, when Layton Goodwin purchased the business. A crematorium was added in 2011.
