Biographical history
James Trevor Bebb was from Lockeport, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. He has written 2 books on Lockeport and Shelburne County. “Ships and Seamen of the Western Ocean: A South Shore Odyssey”, c.1997 and “Quest for the Phantom Fleet, c.1992. He went around the Shelburne area and salvaged many original documents from local businesses that were going out of business. During many years of doing research, he produced many research notes and accumulated substantial photocopied material. It was decided to keep the material together and call it The Lockeport Historical Collection instead of dividing the material into different fonds, because some of the original documents have been interfiled among the photocopies and research notes.
Custodial history
the materials were donated to the Dalhousie University Archives in 2013. Prior to that, they were in the custody of Trevor Bebb. Bebb created the index cards and associated research material. The shipping ledgers were acquired by Bebb from an unknown source sometime during the course of his research into the shipping history of the Lockeport area.
Scope and content
The accession contains index cards originally stored in 10 small plastic boxes and 1 long cardboard box. The cards were created by Trevor Bebb and contain entries from various shipping registers. The cards describe vessels, captains, and sailors. The accession also contains two oversized ledgers from the nineteenth century and several manuscript sheets of poetry. One plastic box was empty when it entered the archives.
