Series represents the functions performed by the CEO, who acts in a position of leadership for the Symphony’s administrative and organizational staff. Documents present here include contract negotiations and contracts, schedules of rehearsals and performances, correspondence and other documents pertaining to professional organizations, publications from professional organizations, and applications and correspondence related to government grants.

Personnel and Productions

Series represents the work of the Director of Personnel and Productions as well as the Librarian. The Personnel documents include job postings, job applications and resumes, audition documents, correspondence with current employees, information on potential guest artists, and documents exchanged with the Players’ Association and the Atlantic Federation of Musicians. The Production documents include negotiations and contracts with venues, artistic and organizational planning for individual concerts and seasons, and correspondence with potential guest performers or conductors. The Librarian’s documents pertain to the rental and purchase of music and its distribution to players.

Marketing and Development

Series reflects the Directors of Marketing and Development, who work together to promote the Symphony and obtain financial support. The documents of the Director of Marketing include negotiations for advertisements in the Symphony’s printed programs, preparation of these programs and other publications, press releases, advertisements and general marketing documents, and copies of articles written about the orchestra. The documents of the Director of Development include negotiations for sponsorships from various corporations, the planning and execution of fundraising events, and documents created during the orchestra’s donation campaigns.

Series contains the printed programs given by the Symphony to those in attendance at concerts and fundraising events. It also contains newsletters and season brochures for single-ticket sales and subscriptions.

Fonds consists of records created by Symphony Nova Scotia in the course of its regular business activities. The majority of the records were created during the process of concert-planning, including special concerts, annual concerts, tours, and concert series. These records include artist contracts, marketing and development documents, internal memos, and correspondence with artists and sponsors.

Records also consist of internal management records, including personnel records, office management files, and the files of the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and Chief Executive Officer. The financial administration of the Symphony is documented though budgets, statements, ledgers, and tickets sales data.

The fonds also contains concert programs and promotional material such as posters, advertisements, flyers, newsletters, and other publications. The final section of the fonds consists of audiovisual and graphic material. There are audio recordings of performances and interviews of Symphony personnel as well as video recordings of advertisements and performances. The graphic material includes promotional photographs and photographs of the orchestra.
