Autographs and photographs of musicians and actors

Series contains autographs, autograph letters, and autographed photographs. The letters were purchased by John Daniel Logan and were predominantly written by composers, including Giuseppe Verdi and Jacques Offenbach. Many of the autographs are signed on concert programs, presumably from concerts that Logan attended. The photographs are of musicians and actors, including several of the English actor Johnston Forbes-Robertson, and were sent to or obtained by Logan for his personal collection and in his capacity as a music critic and journalist.

Programs from the School for the Blind

File contains programs for the following recitals presented at the Halifax School for the Blind: Michel Sciapiro (violin), presented by the Halifax Ladies' Musical Club; Mildred Dilling (harp), with Rose E. Seguin (soprano) and orchestra (conducted by L. Dorothea Webb); and an organ and vocal recital with unknown performers.

The Damnation of Faust by Hector Berlioz : research notes

File contains handwritten notes on the story of Hector Berlioz's "La damnation de Faust, Op. 24" (1846), written for four soloists, children's chorus, seven-part choir, and orchestra. The notes are possibly for a pre-concert lecture or program notes for a concert.

File contains two copies of a booklet containing the texts (in English) of various songs, likely from a concert. The songs include arias, lieder, and popular songs by Giuseppe Verdi, Jules Massenet, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Michael Arne, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Georges Bizet, J. Rogers, Frank La Forge, Arthur Foote, Arthur Rubenstein, Walter Scott, Johann Strauss, and Edward W. Bryant.

Promotional pamphlet on the Aeolian Singers

File contains a pamphlet with biographical information on the Aeolian Singers, commendations, and press reviews. The Aeolian Singers included Lynndale Byers (alto); Frank Odell (tenor); James Logue (baritone); and Jack George (bass).

Music and theatre programs

Series contains programs from concerts and theatre productions that John Daniel Logan attended. Most of the programs are from Halifax groups, but others include operatic and orchestral performances in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, New York, and Boston. Series also includes pamphlets about various performers.

Research materials

Series contains clippings on music, Canadian literature, J.J. Stewart, and Allen M. Reid, as well as a scrapbook compiled by Reid on church organ music and organs. Series also contains research notes and materials for essays and lectures.

Autographs of Mark Hambourg and Boris Hambourg

File contains the autographs of two brothers, Russian pianist Mark Hambourg and the Russian cellist Boris Hambourg, addressed to Dr. J.D. Logan on behalf of the Colonel W.E. Thompson Library of Music and Musical Literature at Dalhousie University. Each of the Hambourg's signatures are accompanied by short musical incipits. The autographs are dated March 5, 1925 in Toronto, Ontario.

Prospectus for the Hambourg Conservatory of Music

File contains a prospectus for the Hambourg Conservatory of Music, directed by Boris Hambourg with visiting director Mark Hambourg. The prospectus includes lesson costs per class for instruments, theory, history, and language. The file also includes John Daniel Logan's member's ticket for the 1912-1913 season of the Hambourg Concert Society (directed by Michael Hambourg, Jan Hambourg, and Boris Hambourg).

Programs from the Halifax Ladies Musical Club

File contains two programs with performances by members of the Halifax Ladies Musical Club: "An Evening with Canadian Creative Composers" with a lecture by Dr. J.D. Logan (November 1, 1921) and a "Debate" between the old masters and modern composers (November 21, 1922). File also contains two programs presented by the Club, for performances by the Hart House String Quartet (Geza de Kresz, Harry Adaskin, Milton Blackstone and Boris Hambourg) (November 28, 1924) and the Hambourg Trio (Greza de Kresz, Reginald Stewart, and Boris Hambourg) (January 11, 1924).

File contains programs from recitals presented at the Hart House Theatre, including the Hart House String Quartet (Geza de Kresz, Harry Adaskin, Milton Blackstone, and Boris Hambourg); Bertram Forsyth (prose and poetry, assisted by Colin McPhee); Geza de Kresz (violin, with Norah Drewett on piano); and a Beethoven centenary commemoration presented by the Hart House String Quartet, Kilbourn String Quartet (Gustave Tinlot, Gerald Kunz, Samuel Belov, and Paul Kefer), and London String Quartet (James Levy, Thomas Petrie, H. File contains a photograph of Harry Dean, a Canadian conductor, pianist, organist, and music educator. He is known for founding the Maritime Academy of Music and the Nova Scotia Registered Music Teachers' Association in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

File contains programs from concerts given at Massey Hall in Toronto, Ontario: Columbian Conservatory Orchestra, conducted by Alfred Bruce with E.H. Painty on piano; the Mendelssohn Choir, conducted by A.S. Vogt; the Mendelssohn Choir, directed by H.A. Fricker; Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Frank S. Welsman with Margaret Huston (soprano); Toronto Symphony Orchestra with Louise Homer (contralto); Toronto Symphony Orchestra with Mischa Elman (violin); John McCormack (tenor) with Edwin Schneider (piano); and the Oratorio Society of Toronto, conducted by Edward Broome, with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nikolai Sokoloff.

File also contains a compilation of all of the programs from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's 1911-1912 season, inscribed to John Daniel Logan. File also contains some newspaper clippings of concert reviews by "A.E.S.S."

Autographs and letters from various composers

File includes a postcard with a black and white photograph of Pietro Mascagni (1863-1945), an Italian opera composer. The postcard has various signatures on the front, including Francesco Marconi (1855-1916, operatic tenor from Rome) and four other illegible signatures. The postcard is addressed to Frau Dr. Lehnsern(?) of Berlin. File also includes the incipits of three pieces by Ignaz Moscheles (1794-1870), signed at dated October 3, 1844. There are also five letters written by the following composers: Jacques Offenbach (1879), Gustav Mahler (1899), Edvard Grieg (1902), Maurice Ravel (1921), and Ignacy Paderewski (n.d., 1860-1941).

File contains a letter written by Franz Liszt to an unidentified person, accompanied by a typed transcription. The letter addresses the publication of some of his songs by Schott, and his cousin, Mlle. Liszt.

File contains a photograph of Douglas Clarke (Dean of the Faculty of Music at McGill University from 1930 to 1955), Ellen Ballon, Frank Cyril James (Principal and Vice Chancellor of McGill University from 1939 until 1962), and an unknown man, standing in front of three microphones for radio stations: CKVL, CFCF, and CKAC. The photograph may have been taken at one of the concerts celebrating the 50th anniversary of the McGill Conservatorium.

Harmony workbooks

File contains eleven harmony workbooks used by Ellen Ballon, including notes and exercises. Two books are labelled "Mr. Goldmark Harmony Book," in reference to her harmony teacher in New York, Rubin Goldmark. Another book includes an inserted repertoire list of piano compositions, composers, and times, presumably related to her piano lessons with Rafael Joseffy.

Britain calls : [lyrics]

File contains a newspaper clipping and letters to Edith J. Archibald concerning her song "Britain Calls," which was written for the Royal Canadian Regiment during World War One. The newspaper clipping includes the text, but not the music, of the song. The letters are from G.A. LeCain, Lieutenant-Colonel of the Commanding 25th Battalion; George Murray, Provincial Secretary; and Evelyn Starr, professional violinist of New York City. An inscription by Edith J. Archibald at the top of the letters reads, "This song, dedicated to the Royal Canadian Regt. has made their 'marchpost' and I am told by an officer of that Regt. that is was played and sung daily during the war. He himself said it had keeped [sic] the men when on the tramp, 'over many a weary mile.'"

File contains the sheet music for a piece for solo voice and piano accompaniment in C Major with words by Neil Herman of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and music by Forsyth de Fronsac of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The sheet music was self-published by Herman and Fronsac. The file also includes a note to Dr. Logan from "W.H.D." to review the sheet music enclosed.

Correspondence regarding Pit Pony audio book

File contains correspondence with Janet and Joyce Barkhouse about making an audio book version of Pit Pony. The file includes pricing for the book, sales, an agreement, and a photograph of Joyce Barkhouse with the book, and a newspaper clipping. The file also includes correspondence relating to a song by Rosalee Peppard written for Joyce Barkhouse.

Administrative records of the Halifax Camerata Singers

Series contains records pertaining to the management of the Halifax Camerata Singers, including financial records, correspondence, minutes from meetings of the Board of Directors, and records relating to the plans for each concert season. The records are organized by concert season, starting with the inception of the Camerata Singers in 1986-1987.
