Late in 1996, Inco acquired rights to mine nickel from the area, and Freedman's visit involved conducting an environmental assessment (which he had done previously for nickel mining sites in Sudbury, Ontario).

Text and illustrations were by Gary Hicks, graphic design was by Rick Janson, and the cover design was by Ingrid Walker. Textbook contains an introduction, a sequence of class presentations, eleven chapters, and four appendices. Chapters include topics such as plant development, zygotic embryos, seed germination, leaf development, and cell differentiation.
