The drawing was commissioned and used for history books on Dalhousie University, like One hundred years of Dalhousie 1818-1918 (1920), and Daniel Cobb Harvey's, An introduction to the history of Dalhousie (1938).

It was used as the residence for college principals on the campus of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. The reverse has in handwriting: "the first house built for college president, at top of hill on College Road, right hand side going up".

James Spencer Mitchell was born Jaunary 10, 1861, the son of James Mitchell and Mary Jackson. He was married first to Mary Cunningham and later to Mary Catherine McIntosh.
