Fonds consists of records created by Symphony Nova Scotia in the course of its regular business activities. The majority of the records were created during the process of concert-planning, including special concerts, annual concerts, tours, and concert series. These records include artist contracts, marketing and development documents, internal memos, and correspondence with artists and sponsors.

Records also consist of internal management records, including personnel records, office management files, and the files of the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and Chief Executive Officer. The financial administration of the Symphony is documented though budgets, statements, ledgers, and tickets sales data.

The fonds also contains concert programs and promotional material such as posters, advertisements, flyers, newsletters, and other publications. The final section of the fonds consists of audiovisual and graphic material. There are audio recordings of performances and interviews of Symphony personnel as well as video recordings of advertisements and performances. The graphic material includes promotional photographs and photographs of the orchestra.

The collection contains a variety of theatre and music programs from across Canada, with a special emphasis on events held in and around Halifax, Nova Scotia. There are also programs from England, United States, France and Russia. Programs date from 1937 to 1986 with a gap between 1941 and 1950.

Programs and posters for concerts by Ellen Ballon

File contains a program for The Town Hall concert series in New York where Ellen Ballon performed February 13, 1943; a program from the Columbus Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Izler Solomon, with whom Ballon performed March 20, 1944; and a poster advertising Ellen Ballon, by her personal representative, Andrew Schulhof.

McDonald and assisted by Suzanne Kenyon (February 15, 1924).

The programs are for a "Weekly Twilight Recital" given by the New Edison Diamond Disc Phonograph (April 30, 1920); and Frances Pelton Jones (harpsichord) and Rose Seguin (soprano), presented by the Halifax Ladies' Musical Club (September 24, 1919) (3 copies).

File contains programs for the following: a recital by Ernest Leslie Schofield, baritone with Harry Dean, piano (October 6, 1925); "The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to the Gospel of St. Luke," conducted by Harry Dean and presented by the Alumni Society (December 18, 1924); a lecture-recital by George M. McDonald, baritone, and Harry Dean, piano (October 4, 1921); and a pianoforte recital by Reginald Stewart, assisted by Luther Dickens Mott, bass-baritone, and Harry Dean, piano.

Program from Nelson Hall

File contains two copies of a program for a recital given by Mrs. Chester MacDonald (soprano), Julius Silverman (violin), and Mrs. H.W. Dodwell (piano), presented by the Local Council of Women. The date of the recital has been revised from November 25, 1924 to December 9, 1924.

Program from the University of Toronto

File contains two copies of a program from the "Address to the Graduating Classes and Opening of the Organ" (June 6, 1912). The program includes an organ recital by Mr. F.A. Moure, bursar of the university, as well as the organ's specifications and a picture. The organ was built by Cassavant Freres of St. Hyacinth, Quebec.

Autographs and photographs of musicians and actors

Series contains autographs, autograph letters, and autographed photographs. The letters were purchased by John Daniel Logan and were predominantly written by composers, including Giuseppe Verdi and Jacques Offenbach. Many of the autographs are signed on concert programs, presumably from concerts that Logan attended. The photographs are of musicians and actors, including several of the English actor Johnston Forbes-Robertson, and were sent to or obtained by Logan for his personal collection and in his capacity as a music critic and journalist.
