History
The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders began as the School of Human Communication Disorders (SHCD), which was founded in 1976. It offers the only programs in audiology and speech-language pathology in Atlantic Canada. Both programs include coursework, clinical education and research activity and lead to a Master of Science.

Functions, occupations and activities
The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers graduate programs in audiology and speech-language pathology in Atlantic Canada. It is affiliated with the Nova Scotia Hearing and Speech Centres, a provincial agency whose mandate is to provide speech, language and hearing services to preschool-aged and adult Nova Scotians. Students also receive clinical education in the Schools' own clinics, including the Dalhousie Aphasia Clinic, Accent Clinic and Audiology Clinics. The School also supports faculty and student research in its labs, including: the Amplification Lab; Child Language Lab; Electrophysiology Lab; Hearing Research Lab; Neurological Communication Disorders Lab; and Speech Science Lab.
Mandates/sources of authority
The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Canadian University Programs in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CACUP-ASLP). Accreditation is assurance that Dalhousie graduates meet the academic requirements for Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) certification and registration in all provincial regulatory bodies.
