History

The Faculty of Health Professions was established in 1962 as an umbrella faculty for all the paramedical groups, an idea first proposed in 1959 by the Medical Faculty Council. Initially it was primarily a merger between the College of Pharmacy and the School of Nursing. It is now one of the largest faculties at Dalhousie, comprised of eight schools, one college and one program, more than 200 faculty members, 80 staff members, and almost 2,500 students.

Places

The Office of the Dean of Health is located in the Burbidge Building on the Carleton Campus, but the schools and programs are located across Halifax on the Carleton, Sexton and Studley campuses and in the IWK and QEII Health Sciences Centre. Faculty and students throughout Dal Health teach and study at the Collaborate Health Education Building (CHEB) on University Avenue.

Legal status

Functions, occupations and activities

The Faculty of Health oversees the schools of Nursing, Health and Human Performance, Health Administration, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and the QEII/Dalhousie School of Health Sciences; the College of Pharmacy; and the Clinical Vision Science Program located at the IWK Health Centre. Dal Health also oversees diploma and certificate programs in various schools and in the College of Pharmacy, including 11 masters-level research programs and two doctoral-level research training programs (PhD in Health and PhD in Nursing).

The faculty supports research in three key areas: health in vulnerable and marginalized populations; physical function and mobility in health; and health services/policy and transformation. Accordingly, it is associated with The Healthy Populations Institute, The Resilience Research Centre, and the Centre for Transformational Nursing and Health Research.

It also supports clinical or practice education, which it describes as the process through which students develop knowledge and skill in their areas of training by working with clients under the supervision of a qualified practitioner.

Mandates/sources of authority

The basic statute relating to Dalhousie University is Chapter 24 of the Acts of 1863. This statute replaced earlier statutes, and the 1863 statute itself has been amended and supplemented several times over the years. The provisions of these various statutes provide for the establishment and regulation of the university, the membership of the Board of Governors and its rights and powers, the authority of senate for the internal regulation of the university (subject to the approval of the board), and various other matters.

Internal structures/genealogy

The Faculty of Health is administered by a Dean, assisted by an Associate Dean of Research, Associate Dean Academic, and 10 assistant deans in areas including Undergraduate Education, Professional Graduate Education Research, Student Research, Citizenship, Community Engagement, Partnerships, Innovation, Development, and Inclusion and Equity.
