Biographical history

Dr. Mitchell was born in Nova Scotia and graduated from the Medical School at the University of Edinburgh in 1859. Affectionately known as 'Dr. Bob', he returned to Amherst, Nova Scotia after completion of his studies and set up a private medical practice while serving for many years as physician and surgeon to the Dorchester Penitentiary.

Custodial history

Fonds was accessioned by the Dalhousie University Archives in 1984. Prior to that, the records were in the custody of Robert MacDonald.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of a biographical history of Dr. Mitchell and his family. Fonds includes a copy of the convocation record, dated 1859, from the University of Edinburgh.
