Vegetation development in a hardwood-forest chronosequence in Nova Scotia : [manuscript and other materials]

File contains the manuscript written by Freedman and M. Crowell, for the Canadian Journal of Forest Research, volume 24. File also includes data sets related to Twinspan and Decorana runs, correspondence, and reviewers comments. Manuscript was originally titled "Vegetation development across a post-disturbance chronosequence of hardwood-forest in Nova Scotia".

Photographs of forestry, biomass, hydrology, and clear-cutting scenes

File contains 215 photographs taken by Bill Freedman at a variety of locations, including Aylesford Lake, NS, and Halifax County, between 1980 and 1995. Photographs show experimental and conventional clear-cutting examples at Aylesford Lake, Nova Scotia; advanced regeneration after a burn near Herring Cove, Nova Scotia; views of Pebbleloggitch Lake, Kejimkujik National Park; different rates of growth of trees of different ages; felling, bucking and sorting of Acer saccharum, and examples of throughfall and stemflow. Also includes examples of herbicide efforts.

Photographs of glyphosate and rhodamine spraying and recovery at Antrim, Riverside, and Little River Lake, Nova Scotia

File contains 108 photographs taken by Bill Freedman at three sites in Nova Scotia between 1983 and 1990. Photographs show glyphosate herbicide spraying at Antrim, Halifax County, the "Riverside" site (possibly along the Shubenacadie River, Hants County), and Little RIver Lake, Kings County.

Photographs of endangered flora and persistent coastal litter at Bon Portage Island, Baccaro and Swaine's Road bogs, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia

File contains 25 photographs taken by Bill Freedman near Barrington, Nova Scotia, in 1991. Photographs show litter on the coast of Bon Portage Island, as well as vegetation (primarily the rare, insectivorous Drosera filiformis) at Baccaro bog and Swaine's Road bog. Photographs show the endangered plants that would be threatened should a peat-mining operation be opened in the area.

Photographs of the destruction caused at Point Pleasant Park, Halifax, Nova Scotia, by the Brown Spruce longhorn beetle

File contains 68 photographs taken largely by Bill Freedman (but also by Sweeney) at Point Pleasant Park, Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2000. Photographs show aerial and up-close examples of the destruction wrought on the urban park by the invasive Brown spruce longhorn beetle, believed to arrive in the city via the nearby port.

Photographs of leaf damage cause by accidental emission of acidic particulates from the Tufts Cove generating station, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

File contains 28 photographs taken by Bill Freedman near the Tufts Cove Generating Station, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in August 1989. Photographs show damage to vegetation (Red oak, pumpkin, cucumber, and tomato) potentially caused by the accidental emission of acidic particulates from the generating station.

Photographs of vegetation in barrens and bogs of Nova Scotia

File contains 22 photographs taken by Bill Freedman between 1989 and 2001. Photographs show vegetation at the Murchyville bog (near Moose River, Nova Scotia), a Christmas tree lot in Lunenburg County, the barrens at Polly Cove (Halifax County), and examples of the endangered Geum peckii on Brier Island (Digby County).

Field notes related to flora at lake sites in southwestern Nova Scotia

File contains a field notebook compiled by Bill Freedman in 1984 during his research on the Riverside region. Includes lists of flora seen at the following Nova Scotia lakes and bogs: Grafton, Snake, McGinty, Big Red, Little Red, Pebbleloggitch, Beaverskin, North Cranberry, Puzzle, Cosiuelle, Little Peskowesk, Mud, Loon, George, Peskowesk, Hilchemakaar, Big Dam East, Big Dam West, Iramy Bog, Mill Bog, Drain, Spectacle, Jordan, and Round Pond.

Notes on property exploration for the Nova Scotia Nature Trust

File contains notes written by Bill Freedman in 2012 while undertaking property explorations for the Nova Scotia Nature Trust. Notes contain a brief survey of each location and potential financial costs involved, for locations at Middle and Outer Pleasant Harbour, Gerard Island, Hemeon's Head, Bougles Isle (?), Pugwash, and a site at Tusket.

Experimental studies of the effects of acidity and associated water chemistry on amphibians : [manuscript and other materials]

File contains draft manuscripts of an article written by Freedman, J. Dale, and J. Kerekes, which appeared in the Proceedings of the Nova Scotia Institute of Science, volume 35, about laboratory bioassays of five species of Nova Scotian amphibians. File also includes correspondence, reviewer comments, and photographs supporting the research.

Short-term changes in vegetation after the silvicultural spraying of glyphosate herbicide onto regenerating clearcuts in Nova Scotia, Canada : [draft manuscript and other materials]

File contains a draft manuscript written by Freedman, R. Morash, and D. MacKinnon, for the Canadian Journal of Forest Research, volume 23. File also contains correspondence and reviewer comments. The article covers spraying at the Antrim, Little River Lake, and Riverside sites.

Proposal for a study on the increased use of wood as an energy source in Nova Scotia : [manuscript and other materials]
