Pottersfield Press editorial records

Series contains primarily edited manuscripts and marked-up page proofs, illustrating the evolution of Pottersfield Press titles from the editorial and production stages through to publication. Published titles are held in Dalhousie University Libraries Special Collections, which serves as a deposit library for Canadian small presses. Correspondence originally filed with manuscripts or page proofs has been retained as found; further editorial correspondence is located in the Correspondence series.

Fonds contains records documenting the creation and management of Pottersfield Press from its inception in 1978. These include administrative documents such as grant and funding applications and author contracts; correspondence between the managing editor and authors, readers, contract editors and others; editorial records including manuscripts and page proofs; and publicity materials such as catalogues and book reviews.

Preparatory notes for the launching of Pottersfield Press

File contains correspondence sent both to and from Lesley Choyce, as he attempted to secure advertisers for early Pottersfield Press publications. File also includes a letter sent by Choyce to potential customers promoting the first issue of Pottersfield Portfolio, as well as a promotional leaflet for the first Atlantic Provinces Literary Annual. File also includes handwritten notes regarding potential promotional methods, as well as typed notes from the September 28, 1979, Atlantic Publishers Association seminar Choyce attended, entitled "Marketing & Government Assistance to Publishers."

Subseries contains primarily grant applications to both federal and provincial government publication programs. Records include unaudited financial statements, financial summaries (operating revenues and expenses, sales costs etc.), business plans, marketing strategies and annual publishing reports, which together provide a valuable summary of the company's activities over a given year.

Series contains correspondence between Lesley Choyce and Pottersfield authors, illustrators, readers, contract editors and book distributors. Some editorial correspondence is filed with manuscripts and page proofs in the Editorial records series.

File contains a double-sided advertising brochure for the John Bell and Lesley Choyce-edited "Visions From the Edge: An Anthology of Atlantic Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy." The verso contains advertisements for the first three issues of Pottersfield Portfolio and the Bell-edited Borealis: A Canadian Magazine of Science Fiction and Fantasy."

File comprises corrected page proofs of the novel as set by Breakwater Books, the original publishers. Also included is correspondence between Harold Horwood, Lesley Choyce and Clyde Rose of Breakwater Books, explaining Horwood's decision to withdraw from his contract with Breakwater and publish instead with Pottersfield.
