Fonds contains the personal and professional records of four generations of the Bigelow family of Nova Scotia. It includes correspondence, legal and financial documents, diaries and memoirs, and photographs that document primarily the family's shipbuilding activities as well as the genealogical interests of John Robert Bigelow.

The Subject Files and Personal Correspondence sub-series contain materials largely related to John Bigelow's interest in his family genealogy. The Professional Correspondence and Notes sub-series provides a broad view of his employment across the forestry industry, both regionally and nationally, while the Scotia Sales Correspondence comprises monthly records during his tenure as director of the company.
