Acts

Series contains materials documenting the acts, predominantly high wire performers, hired by the Bill Lynch Shows and related materials. Written material includes lists of possible performers and their salaries from the Al Martin Agency. Related materials include photographs and posters related to the acts.

Administration

Series contains various administrative documents used to run the Bill Lynch Shows. Materials include letterhead, Greater Exposition Shows contract forms (blank), railway passes, commercial scripts, blueprints, and photographs.

Business correspondence

File contains four business letters written to and from the Bill Lynch Shows from August 19, 1942 to July 16, 1947. The first is from the Bill Lynch Shows regarding a wallet lost on August 18, 1942 by Elmer Rogers and subsequently found, and is dated August 19, 1942. The second is from the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company regarding reconditioning a Caliola organ, and is dated October 6, 1942. The third is from the Annapolis County Exhibition Committee signed by Donald White regarding the Bill Lynch Shows returning from September 14-17, 1943, and is dated June 11, 1943. The fourth is from Teasdale and Foot, Limited and signed by Eric Teasdale regarding purchasing a car and multiple trucks for the Bill Lynch Shows, dated July 16, 1947.

Commercial scripts

File contains thirty-six unique commercial scripts for the Bill Lynch Shows, as well as one longer press release. All of the scripts are for CHSJ Radio, and advertise for shows in Fredericton, Saint John, and Yarmouth. The press release addresses Halifax, Cape Breton, and Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Correspondence

Series contains correspondence in the form of both business letters and personal letters, as well as notes from conversations had regarding the Show by donor Barry Edwards after Bill Lynch’s death.

Daily cash statement forms

File contains daily cash statement forms for the Bill Lynch Shows. The areas to fill out include a statement of cash on hand per last report, a list of possible cash additions including shows, rides, and concessions, a list of possible payments inlcuding wages, advertising, telephones, and traveling expenses, and the statement of cash on hand at the end of the business day. There are four white copies and three yellow copies.

File contains daily reports from the Bill Lynch Shows shows and rides from June to August 1949. The reports are from Halifax and New Glasgow. Areas that are filled out include name of attraction, starting number, finish number, tickets, price, gross, and total. There is one blank form.

The reports are from Halifax, Saint John, Amherst, Chatham, New Glasgow, Saint Stephen, Woodstock, Campbellton, Fredericton, Bridgewater, Charlottetown, Lunenberg, and Sydney. Areas that are filled out include name of attraction, starting number, finish number, tickets, price, gross, and total.

This sub series consists of 6 film reels, 5 VHS tapes, and 1 article regarding sheep. The motion picture material show exhibitions, documentaries, course material, and tours, between 1970-1996.

Financial records

Series contains documents related to the Bill Lynch Shows’ finances and the monetary purchases. Materials include daily reports from shows, daily cash statement forms (blank), invoices, receipts and receipt books, and cash books.

Invoices

File contains invoices from the Bill Lynch Show, including for an iron roof, a wrench set, bolts, hinges and screws, mirrors, gears and engines for rides, music rolls for a Caliola organ, performers from the Al Martin Agency, a car (1951 Pontiac), various carnival supplies (baseballs, dolls, et cetera), and toys.

Johnny Brown catalogue

File contains an envelope from Johnny Brown Dance Shoes and Supplies to the Lynch Shows, a list of practice records for tap dancing, a measurement chart for show clothing, and a catalogue for carnival or show materials to be purchased. Examples include dance belts, tap shoes, finger cymbals, theatrical makeup, and costume materials.

Letter from Ethel to Bill Lynch and other material

File contains an envelope address to the Bill Lynch Shows from Ethel (no last name specified) dated in Amherst November 18, 1942, and Halifax November 20-30, a blank labor service card with notes on the back, a card requesting name and address on the front of letters and parcels, a letter from Ethel to Bill Lynch dated July 25, 1942 from Amherst, and six photographs of: an unidentified woman in Sydney on July 16 1942, an unidentified woman at Murcer [sic] Lake in Sydney on July 13, 1942, an unidentified man in a parked car, a dog, two unidentified men on a ship plank over the war, three unidentified men in uniform and a dog by a Christmas tree, and three unidentified men, two in uniform and one in a suit, outside. Ethel's letter states she would try to enclose photographs of herself, so she may be the unidentified woman in the photos.

Lynch Greater Exposition Shows contract forms

File contains five copies of Lynch Greater Exposition Shows contract forms. The stipulations include supplying a show suitable for ladies and children, the right to cancel the contract in the occurrence of unforeseen circumstances such as cyclones or war, and a space to set out the required number of performances per week. It specifies that the contract is for Canada only, but that the salary will be paid half in American and half in Canadian dollars.

Notes of a conversation with Ronald Power regarding the Bill Lynch Shows

File contains notes taken by Barry Edwards of a conversation with Ronald Power, member of the Army, regarding the Bill Lynch Shows. The notes list some of the rides the Lynch Shows had, and often refer to "The Bill Lynch Farm" (described as being in the early 1950s on the corner Robie and Cunard Street, Halifax). The notes are from March 26, 1985, and are 40 pages long.

Open house 2005

This file contains two copies of "NSAC Open House 2005". These are hand out sheets of activities, exhibits and demonstrations at the open house in 2005.

Photographs

Series contains photographs from the Bill Lynch Shows, including of acts, rides, patrons, and staff. They are in the form of black and white photographs, a metal plate, and cardboard imprints.

Photographs from a scrapbook and other materials

File contains the content of a scrapbook, including twenty-five photographs of the Bill Lynch Shows, two complimentary tickets for the Bill Lynch Shows, and one piece of an envelope addressed to Mr William P. Lynch at the Royal York Hotel, Ontario.

File contains twenty-six railway passes from 1942 and 1943 documenting travel for members of the Bill Lynch Shows. Destinations and departure points include Halifax, Saint John, Toronto, Bridgewater, Yarmouth, Lawrencetown, Newcastle, Moncton, New Glasgow, and Sydney. All the tickets are first class, except for the three in 1951, which are coach. There are three tickets each for: July 25, 1943, September 4, 1943, September 25, 1943, October 4, 1943, and September 17, 1951. There are two tickets for August 12, 1943. There is one ticket each for September 8, 1942, and September 16, 1943.

Receipt book for Cook House

File contains a receipt book for the Cook House from June to September. Locations include Windsor, Gander, Corner Brook, and Grand Falls.

Receipt book for country store

File contains a receipt book for the country store from June to September, 1951. Locations include Lawrencetown, Windsor, Grand Falls, and Corner Brook.

Receipt book for travel and communications

File contains a receipt book for travel and communications expenses from May to September. Locations include Kentville, Halifax, Bathurst, New Glasgow, Sydney, Charlottetown, Moncton, and Woodstock. Financial charges include trains, cars, buses, wires, phone calls, and permits.

File contains 28 receipts and one envelope for the Bill Lynch Shows from June - August, 1951. Some of the receipts are for services including "grind shows", "girl shows", and "esquire." The locations include Moncton, Campbellton, Charlottetown, Lunenberg, New Glasgow, Fredericton, Amherst, Woodstock, Halifax, Saint Stephen, and Saint John.

File contains receipts from the Bill Lynch Show for the Cook House for July - September, 1951. Locations include Digby, Nova Scotia, and Carboneau, Placentia, Gander, and Corner Brook, Newfoundland.

Series contains materials documenting the rides used by the Bill Lynch Shows and related materials. Written material includes expenses, maintenance issues, and assembly instructions. Related materials include blueprints for the rides.

The Bill Lynch Shows fonds

Fonds contains the business papers, photographs, and carnival documents from the Bill Lynch Shows. The business papers consist of financial records, including daily reports, receipts, and invoices, correspondence both personal and professional, catalogues, letterhead and blank forms, and commercial scripts. The photographs include prints, cardboard imprints, and a metal plate, and were mostly taken of various aspects of the Bill Lynch Shows but also include a technical maintenance photograph for a ride. The carnival documents include complimentary Shows passes, act and ride information, and blueprints.

The Bill Lynch Shows letterhead

File contains five copies of letterhead from the Bill Lynch Shows. The letterhead lists William P. Lynch as the President and Manager, along with his photo, and Halifax as their permanent address. Script at the bottom reads "One train load of clean outdoor amusement."

Whip blueprint

File contains one blueprint for the assembly of the deck plates for the Whip, a ride held by the Bill Lynch Shows. The blueprint is from Maritime Steel and Foundries Limited, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.
