Distant Voices

Item consists of a video recording entitled "Distant Voices" by Barbara Badessi. In "Distant Voices", Badessi she links her contemporary experiences as an immigrant with the historic influx of immigrants arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax between 1928 and 1971. Badessi herself emigrated to Canada from her native Italy in 1985.

Black women : we're still standing

Item consists of a collaborative video project produced by black Haligonian women for the Halifax-Jamaica Exchange Program. Through archival photographs, film footage and newspaper clippings the history of the black population of Nova Scotia is recounted. Contemporary poverty and discrimination are shown to have a long history beginning with slavery and broken promises.

People to people : the Halifax north branch library

Item consists of a short video recording by Rick Jansen that aimed at introducing the Halifax North Branch Library as a community-based institution. Through a series of interviews the video looks at Adult Upgrading, Reading Support, inter-organizational co-operation and the need to focus events such as puppet shows in local history. As well, the video provides short excerpts of library programs in action and a short look at the community in which the branch is located.
