Performance records

Subseries contains documents relating to the preparation, promotion, and execution of concerts hosted and/or performed by the Upstream Ensemble and Upstream Orchestra. Records include concert speaking notes, press releases, programs, photographs, a video recording, rehearsal schedules, American Foundation of Musicians (AFM) contracts, and box office records.

Promotional package for concert season

File includes biographies for some of the Upstream Ensemble musicians (Robert Bauer, Jerry Granelli, Sandy Moore, Donald Charles Palmer); a letter sent from Ken Aucoin, Performing Arts Consultant, to Ted Bairstowe, Head of the Performing Arts, Nova Scotia Department of Tourism and Culture, concerning funding for Upstream's first season; and a pamphlet for concerts at Saint Mary's University Art Gallery, including Upstream on May 13, 1990.

Promotional materials for concert season

File includes materials for the Upstream press package, including the season brochure, biographies, repertoire list, and copies of newspaper clippings from their previous season. File also includes an advertisement and program from Upstream's performance at the Peterborough Festival of the Arts.

Box office records for the concert season

File includes records of subscriptions and concert takings and attendance for the 1992-1993 concert season. File also includes "The New Arts Sampler" brochure, which includes advertisements for three Upstream Music concerts.

Records for the Hemispheres concert at Sir James Dunn Theatre

File contains documents relating to the Hemispheres concert, presented by the Upstream Music Association, Hemispheres Music Projects, and Dalhousie University Music Department. Records include correspondence, ticket stubs, copies of newspaper clippings, press releases, draft posters and brochures, and an application to the "Assistance to Community Sponsor Organizations," governed by the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism and Culture to help fund the concert.

Press kit for the Upstream Ensemble

File contains a promotional photograph of the ensemble with their instruments and a promotional statement about the group for the press. Both were sent to Christopher Both, a cellist in the ensemble. The photograph was taken by George Georgakakos.

Correspondence, itinerary, and budgets for Upstream's Ontario fall tour

File also includes the tour manager's report; applications to Canada Council for the Arts for funding; Upstream's technical rider; contracts; and attendance reports at venues (Numus, Waterloo, Ontario; Peterborough Festival for the Arts, Ontario; Espace Musique, Ottawa, Ontario; and New Music Across America/ Red Door Productions, Toronto, Ontario).

Workshops

Subseries contains correspondence, press releases, and planning notes used in improvisational workshops presented and/or organized by Upstream. Many of the workshops in this subseries were organized for, or in collaboration with, Dalhousie University music students.

Nasca lines : performance notes

Item includes two copies of the performance notes. The first copy does not include instructions for Part 3, page 3 and the second copy rectifies this error. The performance notes include instructions for each of the seven sections of the piece; a description of the composition; and diagrams of the orchestra and percussion performance layouts.

Nasca lines : Veto A flashcard

Item is a flashcard with the text "VETO A" on both sides. It is used in conjunction with flashcards "VETO B" and "VETO C" in parts 1 and 7 of the composition to interrupt the normal flow of the music. When the conductor implements VETO A, the orchestra switches to "single focus gestures," which are represented on the score for parts 1 and 7 by a subito fortissimo (sff) sign and graphic notation showing seven arrows pointing at a black dot.

Nasca lines : Alan Davie texts

Item contains excerpts from texts by the Scottish painter Alan Davie (1920-2014) selected by Barry Guy for use in Parts 3A and 5 of the composition. The excerpts are taken from opuses D. 2 (June 1994); D.4 (June 1994); D. 15 (September 1994); D. 16 (June 1996); D. 24a (June 1996); D. 29 (May 1996); and D. 107 (1990). Davie's artwork is also one of the sources of inspiration for the graphic notation in Guy's composition.

It is used in conjunction with flashcards "VETO A" and "VETO C" in parts 1 and 7 of the composition to interrupt the normal flow of the music. When the conductor implements VETO B, the orchestra switches to "dissipating gestures," which are represented on the score for parts 1 and 7 by graphic notation showing nine arrows pointing away from a central black dot.
