Neil was born on July 12, 1853 in Wycocomagh, Cape Breton. He was married first to Mary Ann McDonald (1856-1894), and later to Mary Fraser (1853-1942), the latter of whom is pictured here. Neil died on May 29, 1931 in Thorburn.

Troop also lived in Ottawa, Mrs. MacKathy in Oban Scotland, and an unnamed sister in London, England. He was predeceased by his wife and died childless in New Glasgow in 1926. His latest pastorate was in Thorburn, Pictou County. Print from Nitrate Negative: 25-27
