Administrative records of the Board of Governors of the Technical University of Nova Scotia

Series consists of the records of the Board of Governors of NSTC and TUNS, as well as DalTech, in the following sub-series: Board membership files, 1968-1998; Board of Governors meeting minutes, 1907-1998; Committees' records, 1961-1998; and Executive Committee records, 1947-1998. Files from the appointment and retirement of presidents, vice-presidents and chancellors, as well as other 'appointment' issues are also in this series. Any files with personnel information have restricted access. Series also contains Board correspondence and memoranda, handbooks, policies, terms of reference, etc. Board Membership files include appointment orders-in-council, membership files for individual board members, and lists of members and their terms. A complete set of the minutes for Board of Governors Meetings is available in both bound volumes and microfilm. The final meetings of the DalTech Board were also recorded on audiocassette for Dalhousie Board posterity. There is an index to some of the meeting minutes. The Executive Committee's records include minutes of meetings (bound volumes and microfilm), with an index, as well as some memoranda. The following Committees have records in the Committees sub-series: Building and Grounds Committee; Planning Committee; Logo Committee; Audit Committee; Administrative Committee; Finance Committee; Investment Committee; Personnel Committee; Policy and Planning Committee; Committee on University Affairs; Campus Development Committee; Research Policy Committee; and the Public Relations Committee.

Business archives of the Technical Univesity of Nova Scotia Office of the President and Director of Tech Education

Series consists of files created in the office of the College President and Director of Technical Education, primarily from 1911 to 1947, when Dr. F.H. Sexton held the dual President/Director posting. There are some files from the tenure of Dr. A.E. Cameron, and scattered few from Dr. Holbrook's tenure, then more from the 1980s and 1990s. These later records appear to have been selected by the last President and/or the Department of Community Relations as to what should be transferred to the Archives (i.e. very few and very select records remain from what must have been a larger whole). Series documents vocational education through the operation of evening classes and mining schools, including hiring of instructors, inspection reports, and student records. Photographs of technical education classes are found in the Technical Education Photographs series. The College's contribution to the war effort and to the vocational rehabilitation of discharged soldiers is also documented in this series and the Technical Education Photographs series. Series also documents the administration of NSTC, including hiring of faculty, faculty meetings, correspondence with students, curriculum development, scholarship administration and student records. The President's records also include files from Sexton's involvement in other organizations, including the Education Committee of the Halifax YMCA's Red Triangle Hut, the Maritime Board of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy; the Central Advisory Committee of the Carnegie Corporation; the Biological Board of Canada; the Canadian Education Association; the Rotary Club of Canada; Commission on Highway Dust Prevention; and the Halifax Conservatory of Music. Of particular note are files from Sexton's 1924-1927 tenure as President of the Victoria School of Art and Design, which became the Nova Scotia College of Art in 1925, and from the Board of Governors of the Nova Scotia Museum of Science, 1948-1952. Files are arranged in their original order - alphabetical by subject within each year. College files and technical education files were intermingled.

Department of Alumni Affairs

Series consists of records of the Department of Alumni Affairs for the six years prior to amalgamation with Dalhousie. Series includes records from fundraising campaigns, reunions and liaison with current students and alumni. Photographs of alumni events are found in the Public Relations series.

The Alumni Association of the Technical University of Nova Scotia was formed in 1920 under president R.R. Murray to promote a feeling of unity and loyalty to the College, and to raise funds for the College. Alumni were represented on the Board of Governors as of 1923. Reunions were held in 1937, 1947, 1959 (50th anniversary celebrations) 1964, 1979, 1984 (diamond jubilee) and 1994. Alumni News was first published in 1945. Alumni branches were established first in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa, then worldwide. The Association was governed by an elected Executive Committee and administered by the Department of Alumni Affairs.

Graphic and Audiovisual materials

Series contains audio cassettes of Board of Governors meetings; Public Relations videocassettes of student activities, events, and buildings and approximately 4000 photographs of buildings, convocations, student activities, special events, faculty members, alumni, and graduating student class photos; and Technical Education photographs most of which depict classroom work.

Public Relations

Series consists of files, photographs, audio and video recordings created or collected by the Public Relations office, which document activities of Nova Scotia Technical College and Technical University of Nova Scotia, primarily from the 1980s and 1990s. Public Relations was a Section within the Department of Community Relations. Public Relations promoted Nova Scotia Technical College and Technical University of Nova Scotia through press releases, events, publicity material and providing information. Public Relations also documented events, faculty, staff and students in order to provide photographs and audio and visual recordings for publications and research.

Convocations through the 1990s are fully documented through photographs, audiocassettes, videocassettes and programmes. Construction of campus buildings is well- documented in photographs. The photographs are a visual record of many of the events, people and buildings of Nova Scotia Technical College/Technical University of Nova Scotia/DalTech. Many photographs are labelled; however many others have little identifying information. Some contextual information can be gained by looking for similar images in the publication Tech Flash. All of the photographs in this series may not have been acquired or filed as Public Relations records, but if they did not appear to be created by any other department, they were kept with all other photographs. All photographs and audiovisual material are described in a separate database.

Student Records from the Technical University of Nova Scotia

Series consists of student records maintained by the Registrar's Office. Student records include lists of class marks, lists of students, correspondence regarding students' standing, Registrar's reports, including Reports to the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. Student records are also found in files from the President and Director of Technical Education records series. Access is restricted to protect privacy. Please contact Reference Archivist.
