Autographs and photographs of musicians and actors

Series contains autographs, autograph letters, and autographed photographs. The letters were purchased by John Daniel Logan and were predominantly written by composers, including Giuseppe Verdi and Jacques Offenbach. Many of the autographs are signed on concert programs, presumably from concerts that Logan attended. The photographs are of musicians and actors, including several of the English actor Johnston Forbes-Robertson, and were sent to or obtained by Logan for his personal collection and in his capacity as a music critic and journalist.

Correspondence from Anna Frery

File contains a letter from the actress Anna Frery, thanking John Daniel Logan for his critique of her performance in Aida by Giuseppe Verdi. The letter is written on letterhead from the Grand Union Hotel Co., Limited.

Correspondence from Charles F. Towle

File contains an advertisement and pamphlet on the plays presented by the Stratford-upon-Avon Players at the Princess Theatre in Toronto as part of their first American Tour. Charles F. Towle was the business director of the tour.

Correspondence from Florence Glossop-Harris

File contains three letters from the British actress Florence Glossop-Harris as well as a short resume of her career. One of the letters and the resume are transcribed and typeset. The letters were all written in response to correspondence from Logan on her performance in various plays. Three of the letters are written on letterhead from The Florence Glossop-Harris Company. The file also includes four postcards feature Glossop-Harris, which were sent to Logan.

File contains a letter from the English actor Harry Irvine in response to John Daniel Logan's criticism of his performance in "Othello" at an unidentified theatre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The letter mentions a future lecture at Dalhousie College on "William Shakespeare: A Human Being."

File contains an autographed letter from the English dramatist William Schwenck Gilbert, addressed to the actress Mrs. Bernard Beere (Fanny Mary Whitehead). In 1897, she appeared as Lisa in Gilbert's play "Gretchen".

Music and theatre programs

Series contains programs from concerts and theatre productions that John Daniel Logan attended. Most of the programs are from Halifax groups, but others include operatic and orchestral performances in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, London, New York, and Boston. Series also includes pamphlets about various performers.

Photographs

Subseries contains photographs of famous musicians, composers, and actors, many of which are autographed. The photographs were obtained by John Daniel Logan in his capacity as a concert reviewer and for his personal collection. Many of the photographs were sent by the musicians and actors at his request, as evidenced by his correspondence with them.

Prints of Johnston Forbes-Robertson

File contains a series of prints of paintings and photographs of the English actor Johnston Forbes-Robertson (1853-1937) in and out of costume. One of the prints is autographed by the actor.

File contains musical and theatrical programs for performances by Florence Glossop-Harris company; The Dumbells; Halifax Choral Union and Conservatory Orchestra, directed by Ifan Williams; Boston English Opera Company; Martin Harvey and N. de Silva; F. James Carroll Players; Boston Symphony Ensemble, directed by Augusto Vannini; Madame Germaine Schnitzer and George M. McDonald, accompanied by Marjorie Payne; and the Halifax Philharmonic Society.
