Administrative history

I. H. Mathers and Son Ltd. was a shipping company founded by Isaac H. Mathers in 1872 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Mathers’ son, Isaac Harry, joined the company in 1890 and became the company’s president in 1906. The company exported lumber and canned lobster, later diversifying into other products and expanding their trade to the West Indies and Scandinavia. Harry Isaac Mathers II became the company’s president in 1945. The company expanded to include a tugboat business in the 1960’s, and a freight business in the 1990’s, among other expansions. Today, I. H. Mathers is a fully integrated marine, offshore and logistics services provider with offices in Halifax, Dartmouth, and St. John’s.

Custodial history

Accession 1972-048 was donated by Harry Mathers in July 1972.
