History

Lola Henry was the daughter of W. A. Henry, born in 1903. She worked for a doctor until 1921, when she came to work at Dalhousie as a filing clerk. In 1931 she married and was later employed as a personal secretary for President Carleton Stanley, with whom she was known to have a good working relationship. She also served as a secretary with the Board of Governors. Lola Henry became the personal secretary to A.E. Kerr in 1945 when he became president, though found his style and dictation more difficult to work with. She handled all the files in the President’s office from 1928-1968. In the spring of 1968 Lola Henry received an Honorary Degree from Dalhousie. Under the direction of President Henry Hicks, Lola Henry organized all the files from 1911-1963, which are now stored in the Dalhousie University Archives and provide insight into the many details and people behind the operation of the University over several decades.
