Biographical history
James (Jim) MacSwain was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia and graduated from Mount Allison University with a BA in English. Since 1973, Jim has lived in the Halifax area and was an arts administrator in an artist-run centre in Halifax. He has taught media art production at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University, the Centre for Art Tapes, and the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative. MacSwain’s videos and films were exhibited at a retrospective at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia that was sponsored by the Centre for Art Tapes in 2005.

Neil MacInnis is a Montreal artist whose work revolves around the themes of LGBTQ. MacInnis was associated with the Centre for Art Tapes in Halifax because of his video “Gay Generations”. He also curated the 5th Annual Art by Gay Men exhibition with Jim MacSwain in the 1980s.
Custodial history
The tape was donated to the Dalhousie University Archives in 2013 by the Centre for Art Tapes.
Scope and content
Item consists of a video recording that examines the personal relationship between two gay men from different eras in time and explores the differences and similiarities in the ways they have coped with being gay in a homophobic society.
