Biographical history

Dr. Glenister was born in Halifax in 1901 and received his early education in the city. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Mary's College in 1920 followed by an M.D. from Dalhousie Medical School in 1925.

Upon graduation, Dr. Glenister entered a general practice with Dr. Peter Hebb in Dartmouth before establishing a solo general practice in 1920. He remained at his practice until 1943, at which time he pursued post-graduate studies at the University of Toronto.

He studied Ophthalmology and graduated with an F.R.C.S. in 1945. Dr. Glenister then returned to Halifax and set up a specialist practice in 1945, retiring in 1974. He served on the staff of the Glaucoma Clinic of the Victoria General hospital from 1962-1974.

Dr. Glenister was an active member of many professional associations, which included serving as the first secretary of the Nova Scotia Society of Ophthalmologists. He passed away on November 27, 1987.

Custodial history

Accession 57-96. The records were donated by Peter Glenister, son of Dr. Ernest Glenister, in 1996.; Accession no. 2016-045 donated by Peter Glenister on October 7, 2016. Accession no.2017-008 donated by Peter Glenister on January 4, 2017.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of: three postcards featuring a photograph of medical residents (ca. 1923/1924) and various diplomas and certificates; two photographs of Dr. Ernest Glenister, dated approximately 1945 and 1960; one photograph of Dalhousie University medical residents, class of 1925.
