History
The Faculty of Management was established in 1975 as the Faculty of Administrative Studies, a federated faculty of the School of Business Administration (formerly the Department of Commerce), the School of Public Administration, the School of Library Services and the Maritime School of Social Work. For a short time it also administered a Program in Education Administration and a Program in Health Services Administration. In 1984 it was renamed the Faculty of Management Studies, which was shorted to the Faculty of Management in 1987.

The Faculty of Management administers undergraduate and graduate education across four schools, several programs, and four research centres and institutes, including the Rowe School of Business; the School of Information Management; the School of Public Administration; the School for Resource and Environmental Studies; the Bachelor of Management Program; Executive Education; the Centre for Advanced Management Education; the Centre for Family Business and Regional Prosperity; the Centre for Research in Sustainable Supply Chain Analytics; the Norman Newman Centre for Entrepreneurship; and the MacEachen Institute for Public Policy and Governance. The Faculty is also home to Dalhousie's Centre for Executive & Graduate Education, with programming designed for career-focused working professionals. The Faculty's broad research profile draws from its schools to focus on public institutions, businesses, information and natural resources and the environment, while its Management Career Services provides resources for students, employers and Dalhousie alumni.
Mandates/sources of authority
The basic statute relating to Dalhousie University is Chapter 24 of the Acts of 1863. This statute replaced earlier statutes, and the 1863 statute itself has been amended and supplemented several times over the years. The provisions of these various statutes provide for the establishment and regulation of the university, the membership of the Board of Governors and its rights and powers, the authority of senate for the internal regulation of the university (subject to the approval of the board), and various other matters.
The Faculty of Management publishes mission and vision statements, which comprise the interdisciplinary advancement of management knowledge and practice and inspiring transformational solutions for society.
Internal structures/genealogy
The Dean of Management is directly responsible to the university’s provost & vice-president, academic, and is responsible for the recruitment and promotion of faculty. The dean is supported by associate deans, assistant deans and various administrative and financial officers, managers and facilitators. The Faculty also supports an Advisory Board composed of leaders in both the public and private sectors.
