History

The Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development became an academic faculty in July 2004. Originally called the College of Continuing Education (CCE), it was an amalgamation of several historically separate Dalhousie colleges and institutes, including Henson College, the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA), the Henson Centre, and the Office of Part Time Studies of Extension. It was renamed in July 2021 to reflect the open learning and career development that are key concepts underpinning its purpose to facilitate accessible and transformative learning.

The Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development provides professional development programs and courses; oversees pathway programs including the Transition Year Program, English Language Studies, and University Prep programs; develops and delivers customized in-house training for organizations; and manages learner advising services across the university.

Mandates/sources of authority

The basic statute relating to Dalhousie University is Chapter 24 of the Acts of 1863. This statute replaced earlier statutes, and the 1863 statute itself has been amended and supplemented several times over the years. The provisions of these various statutes provide for the establishment and regulation of the university, the membership of the Board of Governors and its rights and powers, the authority of senate for the internal regulation of the university (subject to the approval of the board), and various other matters.

The Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development's mission statement comprises developing and delivering innovative educational programs that assist individuals to prepare for and succeed in their academic experience; to prepare for and succeed in their professional career; and organizations and communities to expand capacity.

Internal structures/genealogy

The Dean of the Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development is directly responsible to the university’s provost & vice-president, academic, and is responsible for the recruitment and promotion of faculty. The faculty is supported by a local and extended network of 250 practitioners, professionals and academics.
