Human Amusements

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, and legal activities of this project. This potential television series followed the Pendergast family from St. John's to Toronto and was based on Wayne Johnston's first novel of the same title. The program was based on characters created by Wayne Johnston and was about a young man who spent his childhood as a child star and now has to find his own identity. This series contains agreements, applications, biographies, cast lists, correspondence, director's notes, a marketing and distribution plan, one-sheets, outlines, schedules, set detail lists, a series treatment, script notes and scripts, a show bible, a slate package, and a synopsis.

Mindshadows

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. This film was based on J. Bernlef's best-selling novel Hersenschimmen ( Out of Mind). It focuses on a Dutch married couple living in Cape Breton and coping with the husband's advancing Alzheimer's disease. The 113-minute drama was co-produced by Imagex, directed by Heddy Honigman, and written by J. Bernlef. The cast starred Joop Admiraal and Marja Kok. Mindshadows was shown at film festivals in Berlin and Montreal in the 1980s and was also included in the 1993 retrospective of Canadian film Les Cinema du Canada in Paris. This series contains agreements, correspondence, a crew list, credits, film posters, production stills, promotional materials, release prints, scripts, transcripts, a treatment, and video recordings.

Dr. Rock and Roll

The project was a potential feature film about a doctor that plays in a band and lives in the seedy part of the city who comes to learn the stories of the people who live on the streets. This series contains applications, budgets, correspondence, development agreements, proposals, scripts, and a series treatment.

The project was a potential feature film set in Second World War Iceland in a place where the villagers' belief in the "hidden people" of Icelandic mythology foil military attempts to build a look-out. This series contains agreements, a budget, a cast list, correspondence, a pitch, a one-sheet, reports, a synopsis, and scripts.

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, legal, production, and publicity and marketing activities of this project. ImageX was a subsidiary company of imX Communications. The two names, ImageX and imX, are sometimes found within the same file. All corporate records relating to ImageX have been retained.

Les Deux Charles

Series consists of records documenting the administrative, creative, financial, and legal activities of this project. The project was a potential two-part television movie based on Alfred Silver's novel Acadia that was to tell the story of Charles de la Tour and Charles d'Aulnay and their historical battles to gain control of Acadie in the 17th century. This series contains agreements, applications, biographies, a budget, correspondence, a distribution plan, one-sheets, outlines, schedules, and scripts.

A.M. Smith and Company's printed material

This series contains a variety of information related to operations at A.M. Smith and Company, but not created by the company. This includes newspaper clippings, blueprints, manuals procedures and regulations, conference proceedings, reference books, and a scrapbook on fishing (which is composed primarily of newspaper and magazine clippings, and correspondence).

Customer records

This series contains records of Dominion Chair Company's customers. These customers were not limited to the Bass River region or even Nova Scotia - regular clients include ones based in the Maritime Provinces, New England, Great Britain, and the Caribbean. Although there is no comprehensive customer list available, this series provides a glimpse into its various business partnerships. It includes: lists of customers from 1900 and 1931; a list of customers who were audited by the company; lists of orders placed by companies during the period 1892-1944 (note there is not one available for every year in this period).

Employee records

This series contains records of Dominion Chair Company's employees during the first half of the twentieth century. The majority of the records are time books, which provide employee names, the number of hours, or days, they worked, and their wages. The six time books often each contain two years of data, and were created between 1901 and 1943. Employee records also include a payroll journal, bonus sheet, a notebook of an employee's travel expenses, and a book describing the amount of wood hauled by each employee.

Export papers

This series consists of Customs and Sales Tax Drawback Claims completed by the Dominion Chair Company between the years of 1930-1941. These government tax forms include lists of the company's exports for the year, including the names of the destinations, and value of each shipment.

Journals

This series contains a selection of the Dominion Chair Company's general journals that were kept between the years of 1874 and 1950. Employees used these journals on a daily basis to record all transactions. The journal created during the period of 1924-1950 includes annual sales statistics for the years 1925-1927. The majority of these journals have been de-accessioned, but the three that remain in the collection are representative of the time period and material they covered.

Reports and shareholder papers

This series contains documents generated by, or pertaining to, the directors and shareholders of the Dominion Chair Company. These documents include 14 annual Directors' Reports published between 1909 and 1943, letters to shareholders, a newsletter, an analysis of the company's "special loans," lists of shareholders and investors (including those who did not live in the Bass River). This series provides a glimpse into the organizational structure and management of the company, as well as its economic performance during the first half of the twentieth century.

Sales Invoice Copy book

These are Sales Invoice Copy Books for the Dominion Chair Company that are representative of both the range of sales as well as the invoices practices that they employed. These invoices reflect sales to many different countries, including the Caribbean, Ireland and South Africa while clearly showing the majority of their sales in the different areas of the Maritimes.

Correspondence of the Scott Paper Company

Series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence. Correspondents include clients, vendors, personnel, associations, government departments and representatives (both federal and provincial), and insurance companies. Correspondents were located in Nova Scotia, throughout the Atlantic Provinces, the United States, and overseas including Great Britain, Europe, South America, and Asia. The series contains information about products being used by the company, their customer base, employment practices, etc. Some material from the series was discarded (namely invoices and unsolicited mail) and the series was arranged alphabetically by archivist.

Legal

This series contains indentures, court summons, a lumber agreement between Adam Roy and David Pratt and insurance policies on the business recording how much they were insured for and what types of insurance they held.

Sales and operations

Scope and Content This series contains records relating to the sales and operations of the business. Some of these records include lumber surveying and supplies, scale records, market and credit reports, freight rates and circulars. A plan of a building is located in the oversize materials.

Vessel papers of Frieze and Roy

This series consists of records related to vessels owned or operated by Frieze and Roy. The majority of the records include insurance policies for the vessels and charter parties. Some other records include protests, manifests, bills of landing and crew lists. Some correspondence is also located in this series. A sketch of a brigantine is located in the oversize material

Bass River Picnic

This series contains documentation of two community picnics hosted by the Dominion Chair Company in Bass River in 1939 and 1941. The files include receipts of purchases made for the charitable event, as well as itemized lists of expenditures and profits. In 1941, the funds raised by the picnic were donated by the company to the Queen's Canadian Fund for Air Raid Victims.

HARCAN

This series deals with the Canadian corporation created by Harza, referred to as both HARCAN and Harza of Canada. The records mainly detail the creation of the Canadian company, as well as the development of policies and procedures. Information about HARCAN's fate is difficult to find, although records in the collection hint that it was an unsuccessful venture.

Tidal Power Consultants

Tidal Power Consultants Limited was a corporation created to carry out studies concerning the Bay of Fundy Tidal Power Project for the Atlantic Tidal Power Engineering and Management Committee as necessary. Four sponsoring firms all have abundant experience in the utilization of electrical power and water resources: Montreal Engineering Company Limited, The Shawnigan Engineering Company Limited, Harza of Canada Limited, and Balfour Beatty Power Consultants Canada Limited. Dr. E. L. Wilson from Sheffield University is a special consultant to the group, since he has done extensive studies on tidal power projects in Britain.

The series contains notes, correspondence, and clippings concerning Tidal Power Consultants (TPC). There are some administrative records of the organization itself, but the majority concern records about various projects that TPC were involved in or were researching.

Correspondence of Adams and Knickle Limited

Correspondence series consists of Adams & Knickle's general business correspondence and business correspondence concerning its fishing, shipping and vessel operations. The information contained in this series relates to fishing and shipping transactions; relations with both local and foreign agents; shipping events and voyages throughout the Atlantic Ocean; maintenance and refitting of vessels; insurance policies; and legal vessel matters. The Vessel Operations series also contain captain's correspondence and shipping agents' correspondence concerning specific transactions with vessels and events relating to Adams & Knickle vessels.

Financial records of Adams and Knickle Limited

Financial series consists of accounting records, fishing trip financial statements and company financial statements including Clement Fisheries. Types of documents include ledgers, cash books, daybooks, financial statements, stock certificates and accounting papers. The information contained in this series relate to the financial history of Adams & Knickle between 1897 and 1962 and includes transactions with Atlantic seaboard merchants and shipping agents, vessels, insurance companies, port officials, crews, captains, fishermen, vessel accounts, official duties and taxes on materials shipped, revenue, shares and dividends, and other related financial

Dalhousie Alumnae Association

Series contains correspondence regarding administration of the association, subscriptions, information requests and updates, and photograph acquisition requests. Records include minutes of the Executive Council and minutes of semi-annual and annual general meetings.

There stands Dalhousie

Series contains several 16 mm film reels containing a film entitled "There Stands Dalhousie," which premiered at an Alumni Association event in 1976. The film contains video of various Dalhousie buildings and individuals, including David Brown, President Henry Hicks, Wilf Creighton, Miss. Metherall, Murray Rankin, Professor Willis, and C.L. Bennet.

Photographs

Series contains photographs of several pieces of artwork either previously shown in exhibitions or in the Dalhousie Art Gallery permanent collection.

Office of the President

This series includes records transferred from the President's Office before 2013, which marked the establishment of a records schedule and the creation of a new series of records from the President's Office. Types of materials include course descriptions, evaluations and examinations; course proposals and deployment; accreditation information, reviews and correspondence; continuing education and seminar files; academic timetables; library accessions and reference materials; surveys and questionnaires.

Bigelow Familys' photographs

This series contains primarily photographs of Bigelow family members and vessels, as well as photographic reproductions of paintings of ships.

Printed material

This series contains a variety of information that would have been used in the company's operations, including copies of government acts, news about latest trends in the field of pulp and paper, bulletins and relevant articles and research literature, etc. These items would have been used as resources to better operate the company.

Administrative records of Powers Brothers Limited

Series consists of documents pertaining to the administration of Powers Brothers, namely meeting minutes and reports. All documents were produced in Lunenburg, NS, the location of the company's headquarters. The meeting minutes books document three types of meetings held by Powers Brothers: directors, shareholders, and general. Many of these meetings appear to have been annual, although emergency meetings were held on occasion. The books also includes agendas and memos that were created in connection with the meetings. The majority of meetings documented in this series were held by Powers Brothers, with although some were held by the company's subsidiary, Powers Marine Services, which existed from 1944 until 1967. The series also includes reports created by, or pertaining to, Powers Brothers. The company produced annual directors' reports, which were overviews of the company's economic performance. Outside agencies produced a variety of reports on the company, including operations reports, comparison reports, property appraisals, financial forecasts, and a windup plan. Bulk of the materials were created between 1970-1985.

Programs and other materials regarding the Nova Scotia Fisheries Exhibition

Series consists of records pertaining to the company's involvement in the Nova Scotia Fisheries Exhibition. The exhibition was held annually in Lunenburg, and Powers Brothers was part of the committee responsible for organizing prizes and programs for the event for each year represented in this series. The records include correspondence, lists of donations, lists of prizes, lists of prize-winners, and statements of profits and losses.

Employee records of Powers Brothers

Series consists of documents relating to permanent and contract employees hired by Powers Brothers. These employees were primarily based in Lunenburg, but it was common for the company to hire local help for jobs based around the Atlantic Provinces. These documents consist of payroll journals, directories, summaries of vacation and layoffs, and workers' compensation records. This series provides an overview of employee life at Powers Brothers and includes information about job titles, annual compensation, bonuses and raises, hours worked, time off (namely vacation), layoffs, contributions to unions and workers' compensation boards, and the physical risks of the jobs (as detailed in the Workers' Compensation reports of injuries). Architectural and property plans and maps

Series consist of architectural and property plans drawn by, or pertaining to, Powers Brothers. The majority of the documents are blueprints of local buildings in which the company performed jobs, as well as heating and plumbing systems they developed, installed, or repaired around Nova Scotia and the Atlantic Provinces. The plans created by Powers Brothers employees tend to be drawn with a pencil and ruler, although some were created freehand. These originals were usually drawn on very thin paper and should be handled with care. For some contracts, Powers Brothers commissioned external companies to create the plans. This series also includes drawings of the Powers Brothers' property. Plans can also be found in the job files and job estimates series. The majority of files in this series were discarded, as they were not made or commissioned by Powers Brothers, but rather only used as reference documents for calculating job estimates.

Ebenezer Bigelow

This series contains records pertaining to Ebenezer Bigelow's work as a shipbuilder, including correspondence, ledgers, legal documents and financial papers. It also comprises personal papers including diaries, a memoir and a family bible.

This series contains four sub-series: Subject Files; Personal Correspondence; Professional Correspondence and Notes; and Scotia Sales Correspondence. The Subject Files and Personal Correspondence sub-series contain materials largely related to John Bigelow's interest in his family genealogy. The Professional Correspondence and Notes sub-series provides a broad view of his employment across the forestry industry, both regionally and nationally, while the Scotia Sales Correspondence comprises monthly records during his tenure as director of the company.

The following are sub-series under Booth Fisheries; Correspondence, Scallop Production, Financial, Sales and Shipping Operations and Vessel Papers. Correspondence consists of all business correspondence; Scallop Production consists of lab reports, scallop landings, weekly and monthly production sheets, scallop package labels and a list of scallop draggers in the area; Financial consists of cost reports, accounts receivable and disbursements; Sales and Shipping Operations consists of A Methods Study of Booth Fisheries - Lunenburg, boat codes, fire damage report and plans; Vessel Papers consist records relating to vessels Margarete Jane, M.V. Red Diamond, trawler George Kentner and M.V. Pinta.
