According to a researcher Bruce MacDonald "Pte. Kelly received the Military Medal for bravery in the field while serving with the 25th Battalion at Amiens, France, on August 9, 1918. Tragically, he was severely wounded at Cambrai, France, on October 9, 1918, and evacuated to England, where he succumbed to his injuries on October 25, 1918."
