United Nations Economic Commission for Africa - regional leadership seminar on marine/ocean affairs in Africa

File contains agendas, reports, case studies, lists of participants, brochures and handwritten notes from the seminar, which was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia between March 28 and April 2, 1994. Elisabeth Mann Borgese was the coordinator for one of the sessions (April 1, 1994), and made several presentations. The seminar was sponsored by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the International Ocean Institute (IOI), and the IOI's Africa office. Several of the case studies relate to the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLoS) and landlocked Africian nations. File contains duplicate copies, which have not been digitized.

Includes (from the April 2000 meeting): a list of documents, agendas, background papers, correspondence about the participation of the International Ocean Institute (IOI), an "Alternative Draft High Level Declaration," conclusions from the co-chairs, a draft report from Discussion Panel B: "Economic and Social Impact of Marine Pollution and Degradation, Especially in Coastal Areas." Contains, from the August 2000 meetings: correspondence, and discussion papers. Also contains correspondence, a non-paper, press releases, agendas, membership lists, policy papers, copies of a website, a paper from the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds 1971 and 1992, steering committee documents (Mann Borgese was a member), all arising from the Fourth Meeting of Regional Seas held in Montreal between November 21 and 23, 2001. Universities and education for ocean and coastal management by Elisabeth Mann Borgese : [speech]

File contains a copy of Elisabeth Mann Borgese's keynote address that she delivered at "Academic and Cooperative Strategies in Ocean Affairs," an international workshop jointly convened by the University of Malta and Dalhousie University, held in Halifax. The speech argues for reforms in university education, and provides a discussion of the International Ocean Institute (IOI) relationships with universities.

University of Chicago

Series consists of meeting proceedings for the Committee to Frame a World Constitution, correspondence relating to world federalism, and materials belonging to or sent to Quincy Wright, a law professor at the University of Chicago who served on the Central Committee of this Association. Series also contains materials pertaining to the World Citizen's Association that belonged to Quincy Wright.

The University of Chicago was founded in 1890 by the American Baptist Education Society and John D. Rockefeller. Robert Hutchins became the University's fifth president in 1929 and was responsible for many curricular innovations that enhanced the University's reputation. Relevant to this collection is the gathering of a group of humanists, social scientists, anthropologists, philosophers, and lawyers, including G.A. Borgese, Robert Redfield, Richard McKeon, and Mortimer Adler. In 1945, these individuals were joined by scholars from other institutions, including Albert Guerard and Erich Kahler, to form the Committee to Frame a World Constitution under Robert Hutchins and G.A. Borgese. In 1948, the Committee produced a draft World Constitution intended to strengthen the United Nations and guard against international and/or nuclear war. The draft proposed that peace in the world (Pacem in Terris) was impossible without justice, which required decolonization and a new international economic order. The arms race was a symptom of global inequality and disarmament was linked to development. The draft also redefined the concept of property, claiming that the earth's natural resources were the common property of all of mankind, and suggested that instead of nation-states, the world government should be composed of regions. Elisabeth Mann Borgese was a research associate for the Committee to Frame a World Constitution and wrote analyses and reports for use during Committee sessions.
