Item consists of James H. Morrison's handwritten research notes, related to his fieldwork researching several peoples of the Jos Plateau, central Nigeria, in early 1973. Item contains research notes related to the Irrigwe (pages 1-70), Jere (pages 75-143), Buji (pages 149-221), Garawani (pages 225-287), and Amo (pages 295-315) peoples, and includes notes related the origins of each group, chief lists, cultural and sociological specifics, &c. This notebook is the compilation of field work research notebooks completed by James H. Morrison in 1973.

Jos Plateau

File consists of a variety of research notes compiled by James Morrison that span 1973 to 1975. The file contains 1 envelope with three black and white photographs of a pot fragment from Birom, Jarawa. The envelope is addressed to "J Starken c/o Prof Gavin, Dept of History, ABU Zaria". File contains John M. Samci's business card (permanent secretary at the Ministry of Trade & Industry, Benue-Plateau State, Jos.). The file has a collection of loose papers of research notes, oral history interview notes, notes on Zaria, and 2 copies of a typed abstract.

File consists of seven black and white maps of the Jos Plateau. The maps display national boundaries, migration routes, settlements, ethnic groups, pathways of British expeditions and main roads.

File consists of eighteen black and white, and colour maps of the Jos Plateau. The file includes five transparent copies of maps of the Jos Plateau used in James Morrison's thesis. The remaining thirteen maps are a combination of government and topographical maps of the Jos Plateau region of Nigeria.

File is the outline for a paper written by James Morrison on subject matter similar to his thesis, Jos Plateau Societies: Internal Change and External Influences, 1800-1935. Item is a newspaper clipping from the Chronicle Herald entitled Living his heritage and written by Leslie Smith in 1988 about James Morrison's time in Nigeria. The article details Morrison's personal and professional life and contains several photographs of Morrison in Nigeria. The item is pages three to six of Volume 7, Number 6 of the Chronicle Herald.

Mallam dandada

Item consists of one 3M highlander C.90 audio cassette tape recorded by James Morrison in 1973 in the Jos Plateau. The item contains the recording of an interview with Mallam Dandada in Hausa.

Maps related to the Jos Plateau

Subseries consists of twenty five maps related to James Morrison's thesis on the Jos Plateau. Seven of the maps were used in Morrison's published thesis, the others are supporting research documents and are a mix of government produced and hand drawn. The maps depict Nigeria and the Jos Plateau region.

File consists of a range of textual records created by James Morrison related to his thesis on the Jos Plateau in Nigeria in the early 1970's. The file has two copies of a letter with attached questionnaire, the letter was sent to H. G. Farrant, R. G. Potter, W. Suffil, David Rough, G. W. Playfair, John Henderson. The questionnaire focuses on the Jos Plateau and missionary presence. The file also contains typed, loose leaf field notes, and handwritten loose leaf field notes on Jarawa, Amo, Anaguta, Buji, Ganawuri, Irigwe, Jere, RuKuba, Birom, Bachit, Du, Fan, Forum, Gashish, Gyel, Kuru, Riyom, and Vwang. The file contains additional thesis research, a chapter synopsis for the History of the Jos Plateau dated June 11, 1971.

Nigerian politics and history course work

File consists of five papers written by James Morrison in 1969 and 1970 while attending courses on Nigerian history and politics at the University of Ibadan. The papers are handwritten in pen on lined paper and include topics on Ancient Benin, El-Dzehebi, and African History from 1500-1800.

Observations and notes

Item consists of a handwritten spiral bound notebook compiled by James Morrison in the Jos Plateau, Nigeria in the 1970's. The notebook is divided into sections based on ethnic and Indigenous groups: Irrigwe, Amo, Buji, Jere, Aten Garawuri, Challa (Ron), Ana Guta., Pyem and Jarawa. The notebook contains observations on living, and community structures, language, and names of interviews and interpreters.

Oral history

Series consists of seven audio cassettes and textual records. The audio cassettes are oral history field recordings on the Jos Plateau recorded by James Morrison. The textual records are from Atlantic oral history association's conference hosted by James Morrison in Truro.

Oral history research notebooks

Series contains handwritten bound research notebooks completed by James Morrison during his thesis research on the Jos Plateau in Nigeria. The research notebooks contain notes on fieldwork, oral history notes and language lists, drawings and maps. The series contains two subseries, "Complied field work notebooks" and "History of Assakio village".

Oral history, university of Ibadan graduate seminar

File consists of a range of handwritten documents created and compiled by James Morrison in 1972-73 while attending University of Ibadan in Nigeria. The file contains a membership form for the Royal African Society, an outline for Methodology of Oral Tradition for a graduate seminar in history. The file contains correspondence, oral history transcription in the original Hausa, and an "Outline for a General History of a Pre-Colonial State in America".

File consists of two handwritten research notebooks recorded in blue pen by James Morrison in the 1970's. The notebooks contain notes and extracts on anthropology and oral history research in the Jos Plateau from six secondary sources. The notebooks contain numbered pages and a bibliography. File contains one typed internal memorandum from the University of Ibadan addressed to James Morrison in Notebook one.

Photographs of the Jos Plateau

File contains 103 photographs and negatives related to James Morrison's research on the Jos Plateau in Nigeria. The majority of photographs document villages and landscapes in the Jos Plateau taken during research trips in 1973 and 1974. Villages include Anaguta, Fan, Forum, Gusu, Kabong, K'wall, Limoro, Narr, Riyom, Turu, and Zawan. File also include photographs of Morrison's interpreters, Demba Baka and Godfrey Gwott; historical photographs of Jos Town taken ca. 1920s; photographs of St. Joseph's College in Vom, Nigeria; miscellaneous photographs taken in Aburi, Ghana (1968) and Ibadan, Nigeria (1973); and seven 645 film negatives of maps used in Morrison's PhD dissertation. The photographs were originally stored by Morrison in a binder and organized by date, region and ethnic group.

File consists of 17 photographs taken by James Morrison in 1973 in the Jos Plateau in Nigeria. The photographs are mostly landscapes and three images of James Morrison and Albert Gwom, there is one image of James Morrison's desk in Vom. The photographs are of the Ganawuri Hills, Vwang Hills, Riyom, and Vom. There are handwritten inscriptions with a place name, year and direction of camera on the back of each photograph.

File consists of three typed versions of James H. Morrison's PHD proposal entitled "Plan of Study". Each version of the document is unique with annotations and additional information. The Plan of Study includes an introduction, outline, bibliography. The file contains one handwritten version of the Plan of Study with edits.

Plateau area

File is comprised of two notebooks containing handwritten notes from James Morrison in 1973 on the Jos Plateau. The notebooks contain extracts from a collection of oral history research synthesized by James Morrison and written in a series of notebooks (see Associated Materials note). The notebooks are labelled 1 (blue cover) and 2 (green cover). Notebook 1 contains information on the political, religious and social aspects of the Jos Plateau, while notebook 2 contains information on the Pyem ethnic group.

Subseries consists of research notes created by James Morrison during the creation of his thesis on the Jos Plateau. The research notes are handwritten on loose leaf paper and contain notes related to secondary sources and oral history documenation.

File consists of James Morrison's resume, notes for a paper on Niger Company and Tin Mining, and correspondence between James Morrison and Barbara Kerfoot the Regional Coordinator of CUSO.

Riyom and Bachit

Item consists of a handwritten research notebook recorded in pencil and blue pen by James Morrison in 1973. The notes describe the Riyom and Bachit Indigenous groups of the Jos Plateau in Nigeria, including observations on dress and language. The notebook includes a table of contents and hand-numbered pages. There are several pages of loose lined paper with recorded notes on pages 45, 65, and 101.

Ron, Jarawa, Pyem & Sura

Item consists of a handwritten research notebook recorded in pencil, green and blue pen by James Morrison in 1973. The notes describe the Ron, Ganawwi, Jarawa, Pyem and Sura Indigenous groups of the Jos Plateau in Nigeria, including observations on dress and language. The notebook includes a table of contents and hand-numbered pages, the pages are hand-numbered up to 93, the rest of the note book is left blank.

The notes on secondary sources cover a range of topics and focus on different regions in Africa, mostly Nigeria, Sudan, and east Africa. The two typed chapters are titled "Conclusion" and "Sources", the "Conclusion" is annotated and "Sources" includes information on primary oral history sources.
